Rain bruised Gymnopilus?

My guess on these would have to be Gymnopilus luteus. They seem to be bruised on the caps from rain we got yesterday.
Also when uploading these tinypic gave me an ad for photobucket
Habitat: Massachusetts, Growing from the top of a decaying stump (too far gone to determine species)
Gills: Close Orange in color
Stem: Roughly 3 inches
Cap: Roughly 2.5 inches
Spore print color: Taking one, seemed to have orange spores that would wipe off on the stem.
Bruising: Light yellowish green on top
Other information: Smells sort of like anise. It was also growing solitary.

I'm not noticing the green discoloration you mentioned. That being said, these look like a Gymnopilus species. Did you notice a partial veil towards the apex of the stipe? Any photos yet of the prints?

I am color blind so there could very well be no green discoloration. I was referring to the lighter colored spots that it has. Prints have only sat for about an hour sadly, I will definitely post some when I can. Also there was no remnants of a veil which made me think luteus

If the prints are orange then I'd say you have G. luteus. If brown then Pholiota. I don't see any green staining either, but the anise scent makes them sound like lutes.

I don't really see notched gills or an annular zone. I also don't think the cap texture is right for a Jilm. I vote Pholiota species.

The cap was snacked on a bit by some sort of critter which I think is why its got a wierd texture, looks like it almost just ate the orange off the cap. Here's a slightly better picture of the gills.

The cap texture of jilms are usually dry and fibrous, even when they're moist/wet. They do not get "slimy" like Pholiota. The cap photographed seems to have some sort of slimy film on it.

It's probably Pholiota, the spore print is coming out orange on foil but rusty brown on white paper.

If there are any notes of orange I don't think you have Gymnopilus. Gymnopilus spore print is straight rust-red brown. Not orange-brown.

It's still a little light but here's a picture of the spore print.

For what it's worth they look like gymnopilus to me, if you're in the PNW I would guess they are Gymnopilus viridans. Cool looking whatever they are.

This species is to small for viridans, they grow in big clusters too, never alone.

Any interest in studying the specimen I found? I read that you were doing research with gyms.

the black goop is just hydrated spores. the condensation from the mushroom leaves water on the foil and turns the spores into a paste. Just let them dry. I take prints using just paper towels to cover in a glovebox, no condensation issues there.
