Fuzzy Fellers
    #1893776 - 09/08/03 12:42 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Hello all,
Everything was (finally) going ok for my friend with one large specimen ready for microscopy research when they noticed all the other little fellers fuzzing up pretty bad. I remember reading here somewhere that high humidity could cause this, but all they have is perlite/water in a plastic container for humidity. The cake is in an aluminum breadloaf pan sitting on the perlite. The big guy fuzzed up the stem about an inch, and the little guys are now fuzzed up to their brown caps. The strain is TC, and the cake is pulling away from the sides, but seem pretty moist yet.
Any clues? Is this a bad thing?
There's also an EQ cake sitting next to the fuzzy pins, and it's not showing signs of fuzz and it was put in about the same time. The fuzz started growing after putting in chamber. Before that the bread pan just had a plastic cover over it. At least that's what my friend tells me.

Thanks,

-ZTPH

No this isn't neccessarily a bad thing unless they start to rot. and yes, you are correct to think that high humidity is the cause, lower the humidity (remove some of the perlite) and remember to fan daily. and you probably should let the cakes sit on their lids to prevent mold.

They don't smell funny, and they're not turning colors. They're just not growing anymore. I picked the big guy and he was pretty blue inside, too. It looks like too much humidity, but a strange thing that happened was the very first big guy's cap split all around when the veil broke, which looked like it was too dry. however, that guy was growing pretty big before I put it in the tub. Maybe it was too dry when it was smaller.
