See when the government shut down "furloughs" what I've read was 97% of NASA employees, you know, the branch responsible for space exploration and stuff - all that trivial shit, it says a lot about what they deem as essential. Space exploration should be the highest goal we have as a country, and as a species. Innovations found in the wake of pursuing such lofty dreams will only continue to justify our pursuit of the unknown. Or we could just sit here and invade Syria and blow ourselves the fuck up. I mean, let the maniacs in the governments that don't represent the people at all, like 0.01% of all people, steer the ship of state into a collision course at the corner of retarded and dumbass. Agreed?
 Dr. Tyson, take it away.

Somebody already made a thread about how terribly outraged we should be that a bunch of nerds got sent home for a couple of weeks. Also how this impacts basically nothing whatsoever.

The space race was mainly an excuse to openly develop rocket technology for nuclear warheads and to boost national pride.
The future of space exploration is privatized industry anyway.

Yeah, spare me your self-righteous indignation. We all know that blithering retards are up in arms over something they're clearly too stupid to understand. There's no reason to contribute to the mass amount of stupidity that is currently being shat out all about over the (very temporary) shutdowns.

I don't think there's a single conspiracy theory I ascribe to. Not the grassy knoll, not building 7, and not stage cues in moon landing photos.
It is not conspiracy that our national space endeavor is a side effect or complimentary product of our military endeavors. I've heard both Sagan and Tyson express the same idea, the former going as far to say that the moon landing was more or less a publicity stunt to develop the tech for ICBMs, iirc.
Modern gov. space tech doesn't get big funding in the US because it no longer directly advances our military strategy, we're already decades ahead of anyone else when it comes to the militarization of space. 'MERICA!
Privatization of space exploration is an inevitability.

This guy speaks truth.
Gov't funding for science in general usually has to do with military defense and weapons. And, the amount of spending is usually heightened during war time, where our biggest modern achievements in science usually emerge.

My friend works for NASA. He was on the the team that built the satellite that first detected the microwave background radiation from the Big Bang. He's been furloughed. I know he's building another satellite right now, but is don't know the project.
This is his satellite:

This was the project: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilkinson_Microwave_Anisotropy_Probe
This is the famous image that the satellite produced

Yeah I don't get what the argument is with this. Yes, there are good reasons for NASA to be a priority over the long term, and shutting it down permanently would certainly be unwise. It's not being shut down permanently though, it's being shut down temporarily. Shutting down all law enforcement (ignoring the drug law issue for a moment) or the military for even a period of days would have large, negative, immediate consequences. The same simply is not true with NASA. The negative consequences of shutting down NASA, while real, would take longer than that to manifest, so it makes sense that it would be a lower priority to keep open when a short-term shutdown of services happens.

WTF I'm not outraged but you seem to be incapable of seeing past the end of your nose. Wait til the unemployment report comes out, don't you think the consumer confidence will suffer companies will slow production causing more layoffs in anticipation of less spending. There will be no improvements slated to produce more product more efficiently, The marketswill take a sharp dip even on extremely sound companies etc etc. Not to mention dumping 800,000 people onto the unemployment rolls. Would it ever occur to you that that would put a huge strain on the system. The feds also subsidize state and local governments, What happens then huh ? I personally think that most federal workers are overpaid but it is what it is and it will have ramifications on more than one level down the road. Everyone that cries for smaller government should shut the fuck up unless they have a sound solution. And don't even get me started on that fucking sonoabitch bastard dickhead douche bag fuck head asslicking cunt Obama. If I told ya how I really felt You would have to wash your eyes out with soap.

Yeah I don't think it's too controversial at all to say that the space race and the nuclear arms race between the US and USSR were very closely tied. The Germans developed the V-2 rocket near the end of WWII, and the US managed to get to its development team before the Russians did. After WWII both countries devoted huge amounts of resources to developing nuclear weapons and rockets to deliver them efficiently, and the space race was a way of showing off and trying to demoralize the enemy. Obviously there were other benefits too, including additional military ones (the ability to spy from satellites for example.)

So that our military can get to Mars first, duh.
Plus we've got to be ready for aliens showing up, we can't expect to develop Halo suits after the first attack. BSG was pretty clear about that.

I never claimed that NASA is only there to advance the military, obviously it has developed into something much broader than that. Its origins were very closely tied to military technology and goals (and their associated funding) though.

There are compounds more abundant on other planets that are quite rare on Earth. Haven't you ever played Mass Effect? For Christ's sake...
As of now, it would not seem economically efficient. However, as methods improve in space travel (as they have, considering we brought Lance Bass to the moon), space mining will be more on gov't agenda.
It is not far-fetched at all.
For example, the abundance of hydrocarbons that exist on Titan. The abundance of iron ore, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and other metals have been detected on Mars; not to mention the abundance of raw material theorized to exist near the extinct volcanoes, and the meteor impacts.

Sure it's there, but the cost to benefit ratio as it stands would seem to make returning enough materials to justify the trip and expenses completely and utterly unfeasible. Most of those materials are pretty abundant on Earth as well - aluminum is the most abundant element on the Earth's crust. What we seem to need is no longer precious metals but energy - it's always been about energy.
Maybe trying to reach across space at high speeds efficiently would help some great mind out there innovate a new power source for such a trip which would benefit us all - freeing up a lot of time so we can innovate in biology and live forever

We'd have access to sooo much shit, like planets made of diamond or filled with fuel.
Most of those can be found in our solar system.
which planets in our solar system are made of diamond
besides there is nothing special about diamonds, just that women want them for no fucking apparent reason other than jeweler commercials make them feel like if men don't get them one they don't love them or some crock of shit.

sadly, I can't argue against that at all. that is completely true.
that is why I'd think it'd have to be a gov't operation, they are the only ones that are (generally speaking, and LOLZ worthy comment right here) not motivated by profit obviously. wasteful assclowns.

You're not getting the point.
Some metals are indeed abundant on Earth, but it's the form they come in that is rare and much desired. It takes a lot of resources to refine certain elements.
And to that extent, when we talk about energy, we might NEED to mine other planets to fulfill the consumption of energy it takes to travel through space.
So far, nuclear energy seems to be the prime candidate. And uranium, hydrogen isotopes, and other elements used for nuclear power, are rare on earth, and decay quite rapidly. On other planets, due to atmospheric pressure, chemistry, and gravitation, these resources would be much more common.

Specialized applications include use in laboratories as containment for high pressure experiments (see diamond anvil cell), high-performance bearings, and limited use in specialized windows.[76] With the continuing advances being made in the production of synthetic diamonds, future applications are becoming feasible. The high thermal conductivity of diamond makes it suitable as a heat sink for integrated circuits in electronics.[79]
Diamond may be usable as a semiconductor suitable to build integrated circuits[

I'm assuming you are arguing it would not take as much energy to refine these ideal resources on other planets we might find. Why do you think this is so? I'm betting that most planets are similar to earth in the respect that everything is generally a soup of compounds with very few isolated and abundant elements. But, that is pure speculation. I wouldn't mind being wrong

well sure it has some uses, but flying deep into space to mine it? no, it's just not necessary. it is a very abundant allotrope of carbon right here on earth. it is just artificially scarce to make stupid ass men fork over asstons of cash for it.

Exactly. Pushing the limits in exploration has just advanced mans awareness of inner and outer space. If we stop doing that well, it's just back to plato's cave.

Very wrong.
For example. Mars' core is dead, has two smaller moons, farther away from the sun, and has a thinner atmosphere mostly composed of CO2 with thin traces of methane, and is literally a third the size of Earth (correct me if I'm wrong anyone). And then there are the gas planets, which have a plethora of rare compounds due to the weird physics of their mass. Jupiter is a very interesting case. Titan and Earth are more similar in chemistry than Mars and Earth. E
Depending on planetary circumstances, compounds will be found in many different ways, which can be proven to be very beneficial if we can find an efficient way to get there and mine them.
Now, we are talking way out there in the future (but still pretty reasonable to assume we might see the possibilities of planetary mining in our lifetime). I think the first space mining experiment will of course be our moon. We'll see.

I can't disagree with ya, it'd just be speculation and you're right at this point it's all possible. Logistics are about the biggest hurdle to it all.
But I'm sure we'll see mining in space and more than that in the years ahead. I bet some planets/moons in our solar system will be colonized in 30-40 years.

I strongly agree, our destiny is in the stars. If we don't colonize other planets I believe it will be our supreme failure as a species. I just don't think the government is the right vehicle through which we should do the exploring, it will cost 70x as much and take 3x as long if we rely on the gov to get us there, and it will always be for shifty reasons.
