Dunno if it's been suggested yet but Ishmael(Daniel Quinn) is one of my favorites, when I first read it I found it very thought provoking, had never even thought about humanity in that light before and I can definitely say it changed how I see things permanently.

Conversations With God.  The title says it all.  After you read the first chapter you can't put it down.  Really good for the soul.

Siddartha by Herman Hesse

Siddartha, what a great book!

I read Siddartha and Candide at the same time and they reflected similarly upon each other.

I would like to add 'A Country Doctor' by Sarah Orne Jewett

'Mainstreet' by Sinclair Lewis

'The House of Mirth' by Edith Warthon

This small collection presents issues on Gender roles and many other contexts of American life, from the 19th and early 20th century view.
