Truffles
    #18936721 - 10/05/13 04:17 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Opened my first jar of truffles...waited 20 weeks and I need some help. I am having trouble identifying the truffles from the other congealed masses. Is there some way I can identify which are truffles and what are just congealed rye berries? Are all the clumps truffles?

Here are pics...the ones on the left are the truffles I believe...but the ones one top and on the right are what I am having trouble with.

Those all look like sclerotia to me.

It appears there may still be some berries stuck to those on the right hand side, but that could just be the picture.
I think you are good to go my man.

If you really want to clean them well use a dry clean toothbrush and brush the truffles off to remove the half buried seeds.  Specially if you are storing them.  I would not recommend dehydrating them.  They keep pretty good in your bottom fridge bin, if you have a vacuum sealer its a great way to store them.  Also store them free from any light.

Enjoy!

The spore depot has always been my choice for all microscopy products, for observation of course. Just checked and they have them.
