So i want to be a mushroom farmer and ive found this really good program that trains advanced spawn techniques, lab sterility, the whole deal.... And they claim that they can get you started on your career growing medicinal mushrooms.
Im pretty noob to mycology only having cultivated the infamous cubensis which i obviously can't go around saying that on my resume (which i hear is quite easy compared to alot of other fungus to cultivate). So anyways i was wondering if you guys have any species that i should start to get some under my belt? i just ordered a enoki LC syringe im going to attempt that so well see how that goes. Theirs so much stuff i have to learn its crazy....

There's a thread a couple down from yours currently that's a good one to peruse.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18910081
There's a few good 'Mushroom Farming as a Career' threads in this section, actually!
Look around and see what kinds of mushroom food is readily available to you in bulk, and use that information to decide what to grow. Things like straw, manure, waste from food manufacturing, trees, etc.
Good Luck!

Just curious who's offering this program?
You have to be a little cautious of anyone who promises to "get you started on your career". Sounds like the local community college and when you ask about the career placement, they hand you some brochures of like one company you could go work for.
I'd recommend just doing a lot of research on here and trying growing out and see if it's for you. You can learn all you need searching here/the internet. If you love it, check out that program, but ask a lot of questions before you sign up.

just start small, like a couple of bags at a time and scale up as you get experience and confidence. I've only been at this seriously for about a year now, and I'm finally able to support myself. We just did $700 in sales last week which will cover our expenses this month! The goal is $2000 a week. I'm also in an untapped foodie market which is pretty ideal.
Mistakes have been made, and you should make them on a small scale first. It's quite painful throwing out whole batches of straw logs and grain spawn that are bad, and my compost pile is full of them. But most people have to fuck up to learn.
If you're going to Aloha, then that's great! It kind of sounds like what you're describing... Other than that, you may want to be weary.

In most cases you can.
I know the owners of quite a few mushroom farms and every single one of them got their start growing mushrooms with cubes. It's a rite of passage and they won't hold it against you. RR

It is a good idea to know what you have before going for this career. Will your market support this operation? Are there any competition in your area? What local resources are available to allow you to grow your mushrooms? Better to do your market research first before jumping in. Find your local cheap resources to support your operation for the long term is the key here. In the mean time do a lot of reading here to get an idea. Start small to see if you can get everything together and grow from there. Things will not happen over night so there is a learning curve here. Do your math to see what you need for the initial investment because it can be expensive too.

i grow in USA. TN. The only indoor non-button farm (besides everythingmushrooms.com) in state, and region. i get hickory sawdust free for now from a local axe handle factory. it is the life, but it is a helluva a lot of work and a fair amount of start up capital.

Definitely check if there is even a market. I have lots of competition here in Madison, WI. The only reason i can sell mine is because we have superior quality and selection of varieties. DO MARKET RESEARCH!

PNW is too big. I am thinking location specific within your area say 50 or 100 miles or so. Any farmer's market or flea market within your area and the local restaurants, etc.

All of the supermarkets around me are full of all kinds of mushrooms. There are several commercial operations growing oyster, crimini, button and Shiitake. Also there's fungus amongus which sells dried mushrooms in my grocery stores.
I usually buy my mushrooms from the Korean market though because they're much cheaper than regular grocery stores.
There's always room for one more mushroom grower though, you might just have to worker harder and smarter to market yourself than you would have to otherwise.

Where I live now (morocco) there's zero, nada, zilch ... It's sort of daunting.
Not sure yet if the market here is ready to grow commercially, most folks think wild shrooms are weird looking or poisonous, they just know white buttons from pizzas.
There's boletus, black trumpet, agrocybe aegerita and so forth in the forests, french companies come to take them for export, since nobody eats them here.
