Vestal Perspective
    #18935675 - 10/05/13 11:17 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I was talking to my 6yr old daughter last night and was intrigued by her simple but concise and powerful logic on the idea of God.
I've never tried to feed her my beliefs, I wanted her to develop her own, incorruptibly.

She simply asked: "is god real?"
I replied: "nobody knows, just trust your heart"

She then said: "I think god is real, but I won't tell anybody, because I don't know and they don't know."

This is perhaps the ultimate angle on religion.
Nobody knows, therefore all information and theory surrounding religion is trivial, why share your personal beliefs?
Why is there such a need to share personal theory? Simply ego? Fact is nobody knows about anything divine, they just think they know.
Sharing a personal belief with intentions to make others believe you is egotistical and/or narcissistic isn't it? What other benefit comes from others sharing your theory?

A room full of people with the same beliefs is just a room full of people with the same beliefs.
Nothing is improved, nothing is changed, except now these people are less creative, curious and less in awe of life, because they think they have the answers.
I'd rather live in wonder than pretend I know something unknowable.

Too true.  I think it is both egotistical and narcissistic.  However, I think there is a slippery slope here; if sharing one's personal beliefs/thoughts on a matter, when it is truly subject (isn't everything?) is as we think (egotistic/narcissistic) and if one should avoid being either of those things, then why speak at all?

I've thought this before, and it makes me kinda understand why some monastic practices involve silence.  Though, maybe there is a disconnect between sharing your thoughts with and without attachment; maybe only with attachment does it become narcissistic or ego-based.

Your thoughts?

Valid point, I understand what you're saying.
"Why speak at all"..  a slippery slope indeed.

It all depends on your intentions, sincerity, and what you're saying.
Things like sharing education can be selfless, which is what I would consider this thread-
Some insight into flawed human psychology

A certain amount of ego is unavoidable it seems, even with sincere selfless actions.

I agree, ego is here irregardless.  One can be the most compassionate being one can be, but maybe that is just to say, even if only to oneself, "I am the most altruistic."  Ego isn't an issue, methinks, merely an "is."

Anywho, must be crazy having kids; they can be so.. untarnished and thus deeply insightful.

What I mean to express is that someone telling you to believe in something that they themselves cannot be sure of is an ultimate act of hypocrisy and irony. (And as previously stated, egotistical/narcissistic)
This is equivalent to a blind person teaching you how to see- they have no clue what they are talking about, nor could they ever.

I think its reasonable to say that nobody alive knows more about god than you know right now.
We are equally ignorant. All speak of religion or gods existence is guesses and feelings.

The pope is not closer to God than you, he is just closer to Christianity, which is a man-made religion with mans words and mans rules, nothing divine whatsoever.

"Nobody knows." Great answer. There is a knowing, yet that which knows has no self-reference. There is no God where I am.
