People who write books and make documentaries to change the world * 1
    #18936425 - 10/05/13 02:55 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Why don't they make them available for free? One time I was standing in line and copies of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth were set out at the cash registers. A man in line turned to me and said "Why is he charging 17 dollars if he's truly concerned about the fate of the world?"

It's exactly because they're not. That, or because they gotta make a living. But if they're already rich, and they're charging money to sell a book/documentary that's supposed to "help", then they're just in it for the money.

The only world those people want to change is theirs, at your expense.
Don't be fooled.

I think its perfectly acceptable to pay yourself a living wage for something that you truly believe will "change the world." Obviously in this case he doesn't actually need a living wage, but I know people working in the documentary film industry and they truly are barely scraping by, and using the profits from one movie to immediately make the next.

If you have enough money to live on, and can't use more to the better benefit of the world, then yes obviously you are profiteering.

Very few people who made lasting changes in history have had the privilege of knowing as much prior to their own demise

And do they also have a copyright stipulation that completely forbids copying complete with an FBI notice? Because it's one thing to sell copies to raise money but also allow for the free copying and distribution, but it's another to want to completely control your product.

They need to recoup production and distribution fees, OP.

The people who shot, edited, narrated, directed, and wrote the documentary need to be paid. No one does this for free and its A LOT of work

Dolla dolla bills yo.

Sure there are some that do it for the passion, but they still need a buck to eat and live from. It takes time and money. And allowing you product to be given away for free, that's all fine and dandy if your already life  comfy life and can use your own money to finance it. My bet, is most can't.

People like Al Gore do it just for the money, period. You think he really cares about anything besides his bank account and status.
Fuck no.
