Stand up comedy
    #18936172 - 10/05/13 01:48 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

What do ya'll think about dis shit?

I was never much of a a fan of it, my perspective on stand up comedy was basically "So somebody stands up in front of a big crowd and says normal things in an unusual way? That's stupid." because when you get down to it that's all humor really is, looking at things from a perspective that highlights situational contradictions and minimizes the reasons one would have to think something is "normal". But I guess I've got quite the unusual way of looking at things sometimes.

So anyways last night I was watching some of that C.K Louis dude or w/e his name is and to my suprise I'd found myself with a smile on my face and a laughter in my lungs. It got me thinking about some Jim Carrey videos I was watching the other week which I found equally entertaining, and it was like "wah lah, STAND UP COMEDY" like a whole new thing to me almost, a part of my psyche/the world I'd previously left generally unexplored.

So do ya'll have any favorite stand up artists you like n thangs? Post up some funny shit

I like the parts where comedians shit on hecklers (the thought police kind) because of perceived affronts to the political correct rules of life we are supposedly bound to.

This one is my favorite.

Bill Burr is really funny too, but Louis CK is definitely my favorite. Also Kevin Hart.

You're right that a lot of standup is just observational shit, but I think style and delivery count for a lot. Which is why some comics have okay material, but just don't seem all that funny, while other comics seems like they could milk almost anything for a laugh and get away with it once they're warmed up.

That being said... some of these names will be repeated, but that's only proof that I'm telling the truth.

Doug Stanhope.

Mitch Hedberg.

Bill Hicks.

Those are the three you absolutely need to check out. In fact, I advise you to immediately go out and look for Doug Standhope's "No Refunds."  The first time I saw it I laughed so hard my stomach hurt. And I am the kind of weird paradoxical fuck that loves comedy, yet it's ridiculously difficult to get me to belly laugh.
So that's a hell of an endorsement coming from me.

Anyway, those are my votes for now. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Edit / PS:  Here you go. In its entirety and full glory:

Doug Stanhope -- NO REFUNDS

PS. I would have mentioned Carlin, but he has always been more of a teacher than an actual comedian in my book.

Hicks and Carlin had the same goal; to wake people up.  I just thought Hicks did it in a much more comedic fashion.  As Carlin got older, it was almost more like attending a seminar than an actual comedy show, which was still alright in my book.

Not really.
Stand-up, just like art in general has seem to have gone in a "Family Guy" phase.  A lot of these upandcoming comedians seem to have it in their "howtobeacomedian" handbook that the more random you are the funnier you will be.  I think that one Tim and Eric episode hit the spot when they did the Jim and Derrick parody.

Oddly enough, I'd put Nick Swardson in that category of "random comedian", but I still laugh at his bullshit.  Some comedians can pull it off.  Others, more than often, end of being mediocre.

Was a dream come true man. My first comedy show is a huge part of me growing up and my favorite comedian that straight disappeared. Was surreal man so great.

Completely disagree, most all comedians mentioned in this thread are in no way part of the random/family guy phenomena.
They all look at situations from different than usual perspectives, which is why they are teachers teaching us to think differently.

Tim and Eric are completely random, though. Not sure if that was a joke..?

*New comedians

Most of the comedians mentioned in this thread have been in the game for at least 10-15+ years.

Tim and Eric is anti-humor, and to me, a bit dystopian.

Dane Cook is random.

I remember listening to dane's first album in 9th grade during quiet reading time. Me and my friend would crack the fuck up constantly. His first was pure gold after that it was kind of shitty. Think the fame got to his head. Pretty sad considering he was funny as fuck.

I had similar experiences.  I was a sophomore or a junior when his first album came out.  It was funny.

Dane Cook actually rose up with a lot of Boston comedians I love, including Patrice O'Neal.  His style just gets old.  It got predictable after the second album.

Kevin Smith is very funny, his stand up is more like telling stories, but they're funny.

Sarah Silverman can be funny.

Katt Williams is good.

Nick Swardson is good, but different.

I dont even think it was that. I think he stopped writing what made him famous because he got complacent. His first album was comedy gold I was dissapointed there after.
