1977 a good year
    #1893578 - 09/08/03 09:50 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

The Dead played some fine music in the 70s but 77 stands out as a fine year by all accounts.

I was lucky enough to see them 3 times at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ in April followed by 5 nights at the Palladium from 4/29/77 through 5/4/77.

We then followed them up to Cornell university for a show on May 8th and then to Buffalo the next night.

Later in the year we went on a mini road trip which took us to Colgate University for a show on November 4th and to Rochester for a show the next night, followed by a show in Binghamton on November 6th.

What a year!

Shine On

The epic May 1977 run!.. well the entire year but May was.... mmm.. I dunno something was instilling magic night after night.
I wasn't even born yet but thanks to tapers those nights of music have changed my perception of music for good. May 7 and 8 are the two best bootlegs I own, so you skipped out on the Ithica show?

From 75 through the early 80's we traveled up and down the east coast seeing every show possible. Tapered off a bit in the 80's but still saw every NY or NJ show they played till the very end.

http://www.nugs.net/attics/77may_mp3.asp

Everybody's playing in The Heart of Gold Band! May 1977 holds a special place in the hearts of many Deadheads. The mere digits 5, 8, and 77 conjure up notions of swirling spiral-latticed guitar runs and pounding, thunderous bass lines. But don't let the mystique of The Cornell Show fool you. There's plenty more where that came from. Try the "Help>Slip!>Franklin's" from the next night in Buffalo, for instance. Or the "Eyes>Wheel>Wharf Rat" from the night before at the Boston Garden. Or the "Sugaree" from New Haven a few nights earlier.
These shows don't detract from the appeal of The Cornell Show, but rather place 5/8/77 in the context of the band's sustained power of performance during this near-midpoint of their career. Night after night Phil's slides on the fretless bass, Jerry's attacks on the Mu-Tron, Weir's jingle-jangle cowboy timbre, Keith's percussive melodic reinforcement, Donna Jean's wailing vocals, and of course the Rhythm Devils' locomotion together propel this band into the cosmos.

Twenty-five years later, the tapes crackle and spit fire out of your speakers and never cease to amaze upon each new playback. It's unlikely that we'll see any official vault releases of these shows as the master tapes are not in the vault. There are some cuts and splices throughout the tapes that do exist, yet the tracks below represent the best composite of what the band was capable of on any given night in May of 1977.

What is this great mystery with May ?

I've heard the myths about the CIA put ons that those shows didn't actually happen and thats why they aren't in the vault and it was a big brain washing scheme... blah blah blah, the tin foil hat ramblings.... but why wouldn't they be in the Vault? I don't get it. Also why does every version (5, 7, 8)I've ever found have all the songs seperated? I haven't seen a entire stream of those sets ever and I've met alot of people with those boots.

??

Good Question about the tapes not being in the vault however I can assure you that the shows were real

Unless I was tripping real hard!

hehehe, I never really gave that conspiracy stuff much thought but I did once see a 4-5 page discussion on the Dead ezboard about it being a huge put on.  I posted a large Reynolds Wrap advertisement and was chased off by angery conspiracy theorist Dead Heads.  :smirk:

That's incredible.  1977 is often regarded as the best year for the Dead, and 5/8/77 is considered by many to be the greatest show.  I envy you, Ripple!

Yes Ripple. You now have went down as more than a mere man in my book, having witnessed 5/8/77 in person. Phil drops fucking A-bombs on his bass in that Scarlet>Fire! What a fabulous show. If you dont have a copy of this already, I have all of May 77 on CD Id be happy to burn any shows you were at for ya

I'm listening to 5-8-77 right now.

It's pretty good, but I think I like 3-1-69 better.
