Amanita sect. Validae
Habitat: In sandy soil from mixed woods with maple, beech, oak, pine and hemlock.
Gills: Whitish, with flocculent edges. Short gills plentiful.
Stem: Partial veil forms a large annulus that is white and striate on the upper surface and stains pinkish, becoming brownish on the underside. Stem covered with pinkish brown fibrils. Bulb subglobose, grayish with small clefts. Unadorned except for a few random patches of pulverulent, gray universal veil material.
Cap: Gray universal veil covering a blushing cap. About 3" across for the newly opened one.
Spore print color: None taken, but assuming white...
Bruising: Blushes brick red everywhere.
Other information: Apple-like. Not mushroomy at all...

When I first saw them in the evening shadows I thought they were Boletus chrysenteron.

Is Amanita roseitincta in this section? I found some mushrooms under Pine here in GA that resemble yours, and passed them off as more A. roseitincta. Our weather has been dry and I figured they would look different with the warts having not been washed away.

I don't think that species makes it this far up north. A. roseitincta is in section Amanita. These are one of the "blushing" Amanitas. Thanks for the input!

But it is not in the rubescens grouping?

I don't know. They remind me a lot of A. amerirubescens, and I've seen the warts turn grayish on those, but the warts on these are so gray when young and I usually don't find A. amerirubescens this time of season.

Yes they do resemble amerirubescens, yet in a way, not so much. Maybe you are upsetting the group even further! Be careful... This collection could piss off a lot of mycologists... Lol

Yep. That's how I'd describe them.

Like you said that's a western species. These seem a lot like A. amerirubens but the universal veil seems weird. I found some more but I'm no less confused...

Those have a lot in common with the little guy I found today. Same color veil. Darker brown center on the cap?
