Found these while driving to my parents house today.

Habitat: growing out of lawn. guessing from buried wood
Gills: rusty orange, attached/not sure exactly what that means, gills, etc.
Stem: up to about 6 inch, up to an inch, a yellow color, texture, hollow/solid, thick, etc.
Cap: Diameter, yellowish, texture,
Spore print color: printing. but the gills are covered in spores of a rusty orange color
Bruising: not sure if its bruising but where the stem meets the gills it a darker color
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.
If these are active gyms. What would be a good way to peserve these. My wife's about to have our first child like any day now. Her due date is tommorow. So I won't be to take em for a bit. Was debating between drying them or making a tea and freezing it. What do you think.

what trees were around?? if these were growing around conifers, they may be G. ventricosus (which is not active). however, if they were growing in an area dominated by hardwoods, they are likely G. spectabilis (which is active). there is a small possibility that even if they were growing around conifers, they are still G. spectabilis.
the heavily ventricose stipe and coloration of the cap and gills, make me think G. ventricosus is likely. however, that species is more likely to fruit from conifer stumps rather than buried wood.
the only thing you can do is try them. they aren't going to kill you either way. they are much more potent fresh, but you can also dry them and have a good time.
good luck.
let us know how it turns out...

awesome specimens Blue!!
there are likely NO "inactive varieties" of G. spectabilis/junonius (that is, if you want to call them the same species)... the "inactive varieties" are likely a different species that hasn't been studied yet, imo.

They were found like a foot away from a driveway. There was also some pines around. But the mushrooms weren't growing from a stump. And I'm in MA if that helps. I'll make a tea and see what happens.
