Question about 12 hour light cycle for FC
    #18934490 - 10/05/13 02:37 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Is it detrimental for fruit bodies if one switches the lights on for them in the FC at night time instead of daytime? That is to say, 12 hours lights on (but during the night!), and then 12 hours lights off (but during the day!)

PS: Hypothetically speaking let's say the FC is kept in a completely dark room, so that in the daytime no natural light or artificial light from the room will beam on the FC!

My fruitbodies never seemed to care, now matter how irregularly they got exposed to light. I think it was written in some old champignon growing books that light is an important issue for mushroom growing, so many psilocybe growers assumed that it may also play a role for what they were doing. Which turned out to be not quite a big issue, practically, because many growers don´t care, andit still works out for them. However, some people still say that at least cubensis somehow responds to light cycles (probably in a way that light enforces pinning or something). Many opinions, but actually nobody really seems to know the final answer. Or, does anyone?

It won't hurt to enter the room during the dark period.  The reason many cubensis growers don't use bright light is because they're simply happy to 'get some drugs' and don't care if they get nice large, meaty mushrooms with a high finish weight or not.

It's also not due to some book but due to past, current, and ongoing research by people who actually grow mushrooms for a living.  Providing proper lighting to a developing tray of mushrooms will double or triple the harvest weight over a dimly lit room.  It also isn't about pinning, as light is only a secondary pinning trigger.

Lighting requirements of mushrooms.

Will simply getting direct sunlight through a window be enough light provided its for a long enough period of time each day? Has there been any benefit shown to more than 12 hours of light?

In RR's link at the bottom it says
Quote:

"Of course, if you have a bright window near your terrarium, that will suffice, but direct sunlight for more than a few minutes per day should be avoided."

Though that makes me wonder, what about the cubes that grow naturally outside?

EDIT: Also when I was doing the PF tek i had stumbled upon RR's (i think it was him) log of how light really does drastically effect mushrooms. It's pretty interesting stuff, seeing the comparison of 12/12 light cycle vs any other light cycle.

The only reason for the 'few minutes per day' for terrariums is that some people might be tempted to put a terrarium in direct sun all day, and this would heat it up, thus drying out the cakes.  P cubensis in fields in Texas and Florida fruit in the middle of cow pastures in direct sun, but there's enough moisture in the soil from thunderstorms and rain to prevent them drying out.

The bottom line is mushrooms love light and will orient their growing caps towards it to absorb as much as possible.

Would it be ok to put jars and monos in front of a window? All of my jars are currently sitting directly in front of the window and it gets sun most of the day.

As long as the sun is not heating things up too much.

Sorry to hijack but I have a question about this too...I'm growing herb in  the same room on an 18/6 schedule...is this going to make that much of a difference in my shroom yield?

To me it seems like they do most of their growing during the night.
Also, the fans and draft your herbs want will probably dry out your bulk sub.
I wouldn't grow da 'erbs and mushrooms in the same room..

I got some kick-ass shrooms from the window, but I also got some really fucked up subs because it was just too much some days.
Bumps and blobs of myc (?) started growing and my shrooms never made it to full maturity after 1 flush (cooler weather during that time)

Unfortunately I dont have a choice. Not too worried about the sub drying out, I have a lot of free time to mist as much as necessary. Just curious how much my yield is going to suffer with the 18 hours of light.

Will standard fluorescent tube lights be too much, not enough or just right for fruiting? My room is in a windowless room, so the lights are kind of bright to make the room brighter.

I am a night owl and did not think the mushies would mind.  They have not.  I give them 12/12 (daylight florescent) with their/my night being during daylight hours.  They have been doing great.  They do much of their growing at "night", when the lights are out.  I occassionally have to go into their room and turn on the light during "off" hours, and they do not seem to mind.

Peace

Monotubs yes, but colonizing jars should not be exposed to very bright light as it will slow down colonization and could induce early pinning in the jars.  For colonizing jars, regular ambient room light on a day/night schedule is much better than darkness, but avoid very bright light.

We recommend fluorescent lamps in the 5000K to 6500K color temperature range.  Cool white tubes normally found in stores are around 5000K while 'daylight' lamps will run at 6500K.
