Bed Bugs...

Yo,
I've been getting the shit bit out of me the past month. I finally found 2 bed bugs a few days ago. I am positive they are bed bugs. I threw em out.
However, my bites on my hand are still itchy as balls.
Anybody have any experience with bed bugs? Should I be worried I found 2, or am I okay you think?

The only way to get rid of them is to burn all your belongings and move. I wish I was kidding.

you need to clean the shit out of your house bag and wash everything. NO joke, my upstairs neighbors got them and had to throw out everything cuz they didn't take care of it. couches, beds, ect. then they spread to our apartment took like 6 months of anal cleaning and bombing constantly to not see them anymore. very bad and creepy to hav. good luck

after losing everything in a divorce in '10, i lost almost everything again to bed bugs with my first apartment since the divorce last summer. i had to ditch my couch, a nice chair and my bed when i moved. and this was after my place was treated several times for them. they're fuckers and i wouldn't wish it on anyone. if you're seeing them then you need to immediately contact your property management company to see what they'll do for you. if you're a home owner seek professional consultation NOW and do whatever they tell you to the t.
sorry to hear.

The only real way to eliminate the little bastards now is to cook them to death. Search for exterminators in your area that are capable of doing heat treatments. Pesticides are totally ineffective now. It might be costly but it'll actually get rid of the cocksuckers.

Yeah man get professional help immediately before it gets too out of hand.. Bed bugs are no joke. If you saw 2.. those aren't the only ones. They are breeding somewhere.
Check under your mattress, in the cracks of all the sheets and everything.. I bet you find more.

These aren't the responses I wanted to hear hahaha. Damn. This is only a temporary residence, maybe I should move out asap then. But that means I can transfer the bed bugs to my new residence if I don't clean well enough... Ya I'll have to get in touch with my apartment complex people asap.
Thanks you guys for the replies!

You want to bring all the clothes you don't want to a laundry mat, mix them all in with other peoples clean clothing and leave. This will spread the family up to other houses, making the remaining bed bugs lonely. They will at this point leave your house and travel to their family.

My family owns many rental properties. There are two ways we go about it:
Expensive way - Wait for the renters to leave, and hire a pest control company willing to mix up an extra powerful batch of poison because no one lives there. It takes months to get rid of those suckers and so much money.
Cheapo way - Get a caulking gun and seal up every freaking crack in your house. It looks tacky, but it works very well. If they can't get in, they can't bite you, and so they die. Also, cover all the floors with flea and tick powder but don't vacuum it up.
Fun fact: The powder's main ingredient is a poison called permetrine, a precursor to safrole which is used to make MDMA. Be careful, it's deadly poisonous to cats.
Pretty much all the professionals recommend getting rid of your mattress. Renters always leave theirs behind and make it our problem, but what can you do?

I had them for a couple weeks. Kept waking up finding them. Tried to kill them off the mattress and such during the day, but it never made any sort of difference. Ended up moving out of that place and put that mattress and box springs in a basement for a summer. Used it after and no bed bugs. Not sure how the little raid bottles of bed bug spray work, but might be a possibility.

Take this problem seriously, or it will follow you around.

Fuck bedbugs, I had them once. They are the worst insects there are.
We had to throw out everything multiple times, matresses, couches, clothes, etc... and it took us a few months to get rid of them.

Those bites are worse than bee stings, and they itch as bad as poison ivy. I was shooting copious amounts of heroin at the time, and it still fucking hurt like a motherfucker. It really is a serious problem, and if you don't get rid of them they will drive you nuts.

I have read about psychological damage from bed bugs.. wow i'm a bit scared now. I am strong mentally, but I don't want these bugs to get the best of me.
Do you know how bad the PTSD is for that dude you know?
I don't have a serious or tenacious infestation I think.... I lifted up my mattress and checked all the sides of it and didn't find any more bed bugs after finding 2 a few days ago.
I need to clean my room all day tomorrow, though; it is a lil dirty for me.

I thought it was poison ivy at first... but then it didn't develop the classic oozing that poison ivy has.
These bed bug bites are moving from body part to body part... I'm not sure if I'm spreading it myself by itching or if they're biting me every night.
And ya they do itch pretty damn badly

They bite you every night, and they hurt more and more each time you get bitten. Act fact.

No one knew what bed bugs were when I/my parents were kids. The saying never really made sense. They came back in a bad way, but they were gone for a very long time from this country. I blame the Mexicans.

Bedbugs disappeared in the U.S. while DDT was in widespread use. They've come back recently since the chemical has been banned. I don't think Mexico is really to blame.
The feller with the PTSD is alright now, and I'm not even certain if he was ever diagnosed. (My hyperbole, my bad.) Nonetheless now, years later, he lives alone in an almost empty apartment and even carries a single lamp with him from room to room for fear of personal possessions harboring the things.

You're fooked.
My brother brought some home with him last time he stayed home, and it was a nightmare.
I found that mixing iso alcohol, with face wash (Someone help me out here, cyclilic acid sp?)and HOT water works well.
SPRAY EVERYTHING. They hide in the seam of the mattress, the crack in your bed frame, everywhere.
Crack a window, close the door, put a towel at the bottom of the door, and soak errythang.
Goodluck.

You can use diatomaceous earth to supplement the spray as well. You can probably find it at your local hardware store.
Diatoms are really cool, they make silicon dioxide (glass) shells and it cuts the bed bugs and destroys the eggs.

UPDATE:
After a few nights of not seeing any bed bugs, I found 2 more adults just now. And 2 babies.
Okay, I'm not sleeping in that room anymore.
I'm sleeping in the living room.
I am prepared to throw away a lot of my stuff.
I saw one bed bug popping its head out from a crack under the windowsill.
Ahhhh I have one more bowl of weed left... I'm going to smoke it and then eat an omelote and chill out.

I found one in a bed spread at a hotel in S.F in S.O.M.A.. once and they moved me to another room, then offered to dry clean my clothes, and I took them up on that offer... but even then when I got home I took off all my clothes in my garage and left them and my bags there for two years Fuck bed bugs

I slept in the living room last night (first night not in my room) and I definitely noticed that I'm a little paranoid about being bit. Hopefully after a few days of not sleeping in my room I will get less paranoid. I haven't found a bug on me yet... that would be horrible.

They'll spread to your whole house over the next few days, take care of it now man I'm telling you. Get rid of your mattress, go wash & dry all your clothes at a laundromat and don't bring them back in your house until you call an exterminator and get rid of them.
They are seriously insects straight from hell.
Even if you gotta go without buying drugs, or whatever, to be able to hire an exterminator, do it.
Not having a bad bedbug infestation is worth whatever the exterminator is going to charge.

wanna get rid of em?
1. first things first. search your mattress for more. do what you want with them but i had a hard time squishing them, the burn nice though.
2. DRY all of your clothes. you dont have to wash em but whatever. that includes sheets, pillow sheets, shoes, kids stuffed animals, anything that can be heat dried. heat kills bed bugs, as long as your dryer is hot enough it'll help.
3. sweep the whole house under furniture and everything. dont miss an inch.
4. spray rubbing alcohol on appliances (ive seen where they lived in speakers, tvs) anyhting warm, they'll live in it.
5. lightly sift diatomaceous earth on the carpet and especially thick against the base boards. this stuff is like powder to us but glass shards to them. look up its health warnings though, i dont think its safe to breath in much.
this worked for me years ago. its cheap and effective.

Would freezing clothes be effective too? Some clothes cant really handle heat. Its real easy to put a bag of clothes or bed linnen in the freezer for a couple of days.
That is how we deal with lice small kids tend to get in school.
Maybe get one of those plastic allergy covers for your mattress so you can lock them in/out.

From what I've read, bed bugs can survive up to 5 days at 17 degrees Fahrenheit or so.
They can't survive more than 5 minutes in -25 degrees Fahrenheit.
The bugs also can't survive past 120 degrees Fahrenheit or so.
I thought about getting a plastic wrap for my mattress. It might not help, though, because the bugs would just crawl on top of it and still bite me, no?

It's not "infested."
I only find a few once in a while.
I only paid $30 for this mattress so it wouldn't be a huge loss.

Going by the name "bed bug" I assumed they tend to live inside your bed ea mattress. By putting an impenetrable cover over the mattress you would cut off the source so to speak. It would also make the mattress pretty much uninhabitable for them.
If its a really cheap one you might be better of just ditching it. Then buy a new one and use one of those covers until the problem is solved.
Did you say one came from under the window?

I agree with that impenetrable cover idea.
And yes, I was really high at the time, but I definitely found 2 bed bugs on the wall directly below the windowsill. I also thought I saw an adult bed bug crawl into a crack below the windowsill as soon as it knew I was looking at it.
It makes sense because I sleep with my head towards the windowsill, with the mattress directly against the wall.
I had my hands beneath the pillow a few days ago and I've been getting bit solely on my hands and shoulders recently.
This makes me believe that they are coming from the windowsill, since my hands would be the easiest target for them to bite.

You should definitely apply something to seal that windowsill. They are not walking in through the open window right?
I came across this:
http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Bed-Bugs
I read that you will need to leave the cover on for over a year if you want to kill all bugs inside it

There's a lot of good advice in this thread and a lot of not so good advice. I own a pest control company and we've done well over 100 bed bug jobs in the last couple years.
First things first. If you are in an apartment complex, and haven't stayed anywhere else lately, nor bought a new mattress or furniture, there is a fairly good chance you might have gotten it from one of your adjoining neighbors. I would take a good long look at your rental agreement/lease and see if they specifically mention whether or not they or you are responsible for pest infestation in your apartment. In many cases the owner of the property is responsible for it. They would certainly be responsible if the bugs came in from an abutting room. And in many cases if you are in an apartment complex you are required to let your landlord know you've got an infestation.
This is not a simple thing to deal with. Setting off a couple bombs nor sprinkling flea powder is going to do much of anything to stop or disrupt the spread of infestation. You will most likely be looking at 1,500-2,000 dollars or so for a professional treatment and in many cases there will be no warantee and a substantial charge for return visits which are inevitable. Heat treatments are generally much more.
If you are stuck dealing with it yourself, you need to bag up all of your clothes all bring them to be laundered, make sure to dry at as high a temperature as possible... Leave them in bags and keep them out of your apartment until you've treated. Clean your apartment meticulously and create access to every area of your apartment. Then buy Permethrin concentrate at DIY pest or somewhere similar. Every state has different rules and regulations of who can buy this chemical, but always generally have it available for sale, sometimes just not the concentrate. You will want to mix this down to .5% in a 1 or 2 gallon spray bottle you would buy for treating weeds outside. Then proceed to spray your entire apartment. Spend extra time and use extra chemical around your bedroom if that seems to be where they are concentrated. Also spray in all the nooks and crannies of your couch. IF possible it would be good to get a duster bottle and some diotamaceous earth or a chemical dust- "Delta" or deltamethrin would be a great choice. Use this to get into voids you can't reach with the spray or can't spray with a liquid like inside the light sockets. Permethrin is safe for application to the mattress itself.
Then you will need a mattress liner. Buy a good one, the cheap ones rip very, very easily and are then useless. Bed bugs don't just crawl around outside looking to crawl in your house. That's not how it works. You either brought them there or your adjoining neighbor did.
The sooner you take care of this problem the better. I wish you good luck!
Edit- just noticed you said you paid $30 for the mattress? Was it used? Because if so, or if it was one of the refurbished ones there's a good chance that's your culprit right there. Whenever ordering a new bed make sure to request that it's delivered still sealed in its bag. In many cases the people who deliver mattresses will take the old dirty mattresses as part of the deal when buying the bed, these get put in the truck right next to the new mattresses they're out delivering and then they've got them as well.

Alright OP, get yer head outta yer ass. Yer doing this wrong.
You find a bedbug and wait two days to decide what to do with your mattress? Dumb. This problem requires deft and systematic action.
So you found one baby? Do you think these things lay one egg at a time? There are many more than the three you've found.
Tuff love.

I threw my mattress out last night. I've been washing/drying (and re-drying) all my clothes and sheets. Next step is get Diatomaceous earth. I'm also sanitizing all of my room with a rubbing alcohol spray. I need to borrow a vacuum from a friend, too.
I really appreciate how helpful you all are... and I know man, tough love is good love.

This thread had me wondering if bed bugs have some sort of natural predator.
Like Gortax said, you release some spiders in your room and they will hunt and kill the bed bugs.
Definitely a good idea to get your bed off the ground too.
Reading this makes me itchy...

OK, it's called Permethrin, and it is a natural compound that comes from chrysanthemum flowers. A second compound called piperonyl butoxide increases the toxicity of permethrin to insects. Piperonyl butoxide is made from safrole. Safrole is the precursor, not the other way around.
This is a fairly common concoction. You will find these two chemicals in many common insect killing sprays.

Why are you using alcohol? That's not going to kill them.
Postponing is only going to make the problem much worse. It could very likely become so bad you WILL NOT be able to deal with it yourself in the very near future.
Have ya talked to your landlord yet?

I read in a lot of places that people had good experiences with using alcohol. It's cheap, that's why I'm trying it.
I don't have a landlord. I didn't sign a lease for this apartment. I'm just paying my roommate straight up. I told him that he might want to tell his landlord about it.

Minus the insults, I would have to agree. When I been staying in hostels/hotels around the world and bed bugs are discovered, the room is closed, the mattress burned and all fabrics etc destroyed. The individual who had occupied the room will not be allowed to move to another room until ALL their stuff has been hot washed and dried at least twice and they have received a similar scrub down.
This was the case even in $5 per night shit holes in Mexico etc. I really wouldn't assume you have got rid of them until you have taken real steps to deal with them. If you are moving in with "good friends" you really don't want to drop this deuce on their doorstep..

Hmmmm, I also sleep on a mattress on the floor and I just saw one of these fuckers several days ago on the floor a couple feet from the mattress. My roomate denied it was a bed bug but it definitely was. However, subsequent searching of the bed showed no sign of more. It's possible one got through my window, as the window is cracked and crudely boarded up. I hope I don't get more. What should I do?

There was a month long period where I thought I had bed bugs. Turns out what I thought were bed bugs, were actually carpet beetle larvae. There is a website that deals with bed bugs, and they say that a majority of people that report they have bed bugs really have carpet beetles. In case you don't know what a carpet beetle looks like, they are like little miniature lady bugs that are cream colored with brown spots, and their larvae are like tiny worms or caterpillars that are divided into three different colors.
Heres a carpet beetle larva next to the larger bed bug for comparison.

http://blog.epa.gov/greeningtheapple/2012/05/carpet-beetles-are-welcome-in-my-house-if-it-means-not-having-bed-bugs/
The carpet beetles did eat little holes in a bunch of my t-shirts. They don't normally eat cotton, but if you leave your stank on them in the hamper, they will munch.

Yeah, when I thought we had bed bugs, I thought I was going crazy. Literally, that was as close to insane as I've ever been. I couldn't sit still for a minute without lifting up the cushions and checking. Now that I look back at it, it's kinda funny, but i was absolutely mentally unbalanced at the time.
God damn, now that I think of it, I probably was nuts. I started wearing earplugs so they wouldn't crawl inside my head while I was asleep.

Mike, I've only found about 6 bed bugs total in the past 2/3 months. I've gotten bit a lot. You are going to to start getting bit, I reckon. There's not much you can do except re-read this thread and start making moves to clean up your place. Clean everything!!!!

I know this thread is five years old but I was talking to a pest control dude last week and he was showing me bed bug infestation pics
and also a few things according to him he told me:
- for every one you see, assume there are at least 15 more that are in hiding
- they will never disappear on their own; so just sleeping in another room and hoping they go away is not an option, they will find you no matter where you sleep in your home/apt/whatever and continue to breed
- they find you by the carbon dioxide you breathe (I think he said carbon dioxide), this is how they know when to emerge and feed on you, and they will travel to other rooms to find you
- since choosing pest control as a career many years ago as you might guess he has become adept at knowing where bed bugs favorite hiding places are, and he claims that at every single hotel he has stayed that he has located bed bugs at least 50% of the time, "good" hotels too
- if you stay at a hotel check your bags/luggage thoroughly when you get back home because they hitch rides by crawling into your bag/luggage
- the worst infestation he saw was a home where they were literally falling off the ceiling
- heat treatment runs around $1,500 on average but is by far the most effective
- the stereotype is that only people who are slobs get bed bugs, he said that this is unequivocally untrue and that bed bugs are just as likely to make their way into a pristine home as a messy/dirty/sloppy home, all you need is one to hitch a ride into your home
now THAT is a true infestation
my question is, if you tried to sleep on that bed, wouldn't you wake up in the middle of the night with literally an army of them feeding on you?
sheesh man just the thought makes my skin crawl

No jokes I treated an apartment that was crawling with bugs on the walls and essentially every surface in the living room. It made that video look tame. There was easily 50000 bugs there. I didn’t take pics cuz I didn’t even wanna be in there. They were dropping from the ceiling and landing on me. I did get em though and the apt complex hired me to do the whole rest of the building every apartment in the building had them.

I used to have bed bugs but they never bit my wife..they were just obsessed with me. One time on LSD I saw one on my hand and I was tripping so hard, I let it crawl under my sleeve so I could be "one with the bugs"
Gross..I know. I never saw that little bugger again.

Maybe that bed bug got some of that L out of your blood stream and had his little bed bug mind blown

It’s a combination of heat + pesticides + a chlorine dioxide fumigation mostly Heat treatment is very costly and not practical in every instance.

Hopefully it wasn't a tick, instead of a bedbug. That would explain why you never saw him again. He is living inside you

Nah they were bed bugs. I would never feel them it was nuts. Id be in bed and I would wake up with bites. We knew it was bed bugs for a little bit. Then when I took acid, a few day before I got committed I tripped and just let the bug be. I was experiencing heavy stuff like feeling like my eyes were moving in and we all started out as bugs and one with the insects and all that. I was spun.

Ticks don’t live inside you. They feed on your blood then fall off.

I think with Bill, they would stick around.
For real though I thought they burrow themselves under your skin or something to eat your blood?

Oh yeah that's another thing the pest/bedbug guy said -- they only feed on you for like 10 minutes and then they run off. And they only need to eat on average once a week.

No, you won't wake up even if an army of bed bugs is feeding on you because they numb your skin with some chemical so you can't feel them feeding off you.

That makes sense because I NEVER felt them bite me. That's why I didn't care to let that one crawl all over me. I was truly one with the bugs!

Bed bugs are a nightmare. Might as well just burn everything and start over.
Gf and I just had them. We got rid of everything and moved.

They like certain blood types. Same with fleas and shit. A couple summers ago we had a pretty bad flea problem and me and my room mates daughters legs were covered in bites. While the mom and the son didn't have a single one.

If you live in a very sunny place you're able to save clothes and the like by laying them out in the sun for a couple of days. That'll kill the bugs and the eggs. Furniture can be treated with methylated spirits, but bedding and mattresses are best to be burned.
Dealt with this shit before. Nasty stuff.

I would legit have serious PTSD if that happened to me. I actually did self-diagnose myself with minor PTSD during and for a little while after I had bed bugs.... the reason I am sure I had it is because I would start to wake up in the middle of the night and I would immediately feel that something is wrong and I would quickly get up and turn on the lights and get down onto my bed to try to find any bed bugs scurrying away... I would do that every night for a while... I couldn't help it... sometimes I would find them on the walls just before they were able to make it into their hiding spot in a crack in the wall (I lived at a pretty old apartment complex back then).

I didn't really wanna post this pic because it'll give me nightmares. And don't look at it if it may give any of you the same nightmares, but...

...that's what a bedbug infestation army looks like when they're feeding on someone.

Yeah bedbugs don't discriminate on coasts.
They just like cities. The more people -- the more bed bugs.

Cuz there’s no bedbugs on the entire west coast right?

I got bed bugs back in 2015. I STILL have nightmares about it occasionally. Definitely always check hotel rooms before you set anything down- I put my luggage in the bathtub and remove all sheets and blankets and flip mattresses over, inspecting everything with a flashlight. I hope to never have that experience ever again.
