Actually, executions cost more tax dollars than keeping them in prison for life.
yeah that's totally true. And I think it's absolutely insane. It's also insane that it costs like a million dollars to keep someone in jail for life.
The prison system is bucked up the futt in more ways than one. that's for sure

The purpose of the death penalty isn't to cause pain to the prisoner per se... It's to remove the threat that the prisoner poses to society, being deemed by a jury of peers to be beyond rehabilitation. The punishment is the permanent removal from society, all society.
I find it odd that as a culture we hope for things like prison rape and painful execution. How awful is it that we cannot move beyond the violent thoughts that lead to the crimes our prisoners commit.

That's what I was trying to say. Its sad thar assholes readily pass out judgment to others that's equally or worse then the crime committed. Its bull shit and hypocritical. But that's the culture being, the best double standard hypocritical ass wipes we can be with a smile.

I'm with Synthe and Dark3st.
Wanting others to suffer, or taking joy in their death and suffering lowers yourself to the very level of the monsters you're passing judgment on. And the fact that you can't see it is sad.
Not to mention the perhaps more important notion that innocent men have been put on death row. Actually, just last month I was reading about a case.
I'd rather see the death penalty abolished altogether. IMO it's too much for even one innocent person to die, so that society can get off on their (government approved and sanitized) sick, hypocritical revenge fantasy. Even if we could be 100% certain of a person's guilt, I would only support a death penalty in cases where the person was an ongoing threat to others' safety. (Extreme escape risk for a violent offender, continued murders in prison, etc.)
It just seems wrong that as a society we say "Life is sacred, and should be preserved, and the most heinous crime possible is to take a life....except for these guys over here-- fuck you, you suck, die painfully, bitches."
