The souffle cups that they use for jello shots work, you get a higher contam rate and they dry out faster, but they're servicable. Otherwise, you can use pint jars, but they're bulky and you can't get a top-down view without opening them.

I bought a huge tube of 1 1/2 oz plastic containers for three or four bucks from a wholesale store that sells to restaurants. They seem to be working out so far!
However if that's not feasible, maaaaybe you could try putting a layer to cool on a sheet of wax paper in a pan, then cutting it to size after it cools, and putting the individual slices into sandwich bags?
Thats stuff is all cheap and readily a available.

Dig through your fridge and cabinets. Find any glass jar with metal lid. Wash it out real good and make a filtered GE hole.

Well I ended up picking up 50 condiment containers like the kind restaurants will give you for dipping sauces, 2 oz for 2$ they are rather small but I think they will do the trick I guess I'm gonna find out! Man if they do work that was def. a good buy we will see thought I just wish they were larger diameter. But wtf I don't think I can complain thanks guys

A case of 12 reusable glass jars with lids in any size you want is about 8 bucks. Id start there.

This is definitely not an area to skimp. Clean cultures > *
I've used the sauce containers. It worked, but is not ideal. Same with jars, they are a bitch when it comes to finagling a scalpel through the lid for an agar wedge.
I'd say buy a dozen jars and try it out. If you have trouble, then suck it up and get some petris. If you arent isolating, then you really dont need a lot to be successful. Like 2 or 3 to ensure a clean culture, then G2G master jars out and you'll have more spawn than you'll need (as it seems your grow isnt one that requires 100+ qrts of spawn)

pre-sterrilized petri's are the best way..why try to be cheap...iv been down this road before...used jars-tupperware-all kinds of things...by the time you find something that works...hell you could have already bought 4 or 5 sleeves of petris or more..if you go with jars go with the 1/2 pint wide mouth jars

some times you just got to figure stuff out yourown, But if jar and petri are to expensive then id quit. No point in skim where it counts. Hell a spore syringe cost $10-30

Yeah I fucked up I guess cause I already made it up and did not realize target sold jars as far as the Petris I don't know of anywhere around here to buy them I usually get them through out grow but I needed the shit last night so I made up the agar and poured 50 ( all of them) it was fucking simple though just snapping that lid on. But Im wondering if I need to put micropore tape on the lids I'm hoping the snap lids will be enough because I hate putting the fucking tape on do you think I need to if so someone please post as I'm getting ready to hop in shower then get to work on some transferring I wish I had something better maybe if I'm successful someone will make a trade I only have gourmets I found. Enoki , reishi , and I think Hans grifola but I didn't label that one but the mycelium appears to be it we will see hopefully but about the tape someone PLEASE post I have plenty I'm just thinking unnecessary because of snap lids!

Yes I wish I would have went that route but I had read a post where a guy said he uses them all the time and they work fine I wish I hadn't seen it now thought because yes I was skimpin but also thought wtf 50 for 2$ now if I had some seriously good shit happening I would have used the 10 half pint wide mouths I have but I am excited still mostly about the reishi! But about the tape someone please tell me what u think I would post some pics of what I've got going on now but using cell and the fucking things won't upload Internet got shut off told ya I am running low on funds work is almost nonexistent right now but things are supposed to be picking up

Ive used everything from solo 2oz and 4oz souffle cups(restaurant condiment cups), to small mouth and wide mouth 1/2 pint jars, to petri dishes.
In my experience Petris are by far the best to use culture wise.
The benefits to using jars are...
1. you can use a no pour agar method (pour before you sterilize) so your 100% sure your agar is contam free till u add your culture. 2. There reusable. 3. they dont seem to dry out as fast. (this may be my imagination)
The cons to using jars.
1. You cant see the culture very well, the sides are usually textured and the lids are metal. (im sure some of you remember this little experiment i did a while back.

too much hastle to make it worth it.
The pros to using Petris.
1. Easy to work with, and store since there thin and stack nice. 2. There pre sterilized 3. They give the best culture visibility.

Cons. 1. 9x out of 10 you have to order them online and unless your buying a case of 500 the shipping makes this option bad in my opinion. 2. You have to pour after sterilizing. 3. This is probably the biggest con for me, there single use, and plastic never completely degrades, and its extremely bad for the environment, and our eco systems.
Ive found something that works well for me. It might not be your ball of wax but it is a good option.
I went to wal mart and bought 49 of these for 15$ there Ziploc storage containers.

Pros.
1. There pretty cheap. 2. There reusable. (so there better for the environment.) 3. Good size so you can get the growth you want to see before transferring (not an issue w/ petris or WM 1/2 pints but is w/ SM and condiment cups.) 4. Cultures are easy enough to see. 5. Since there PP5 you can pour then sterilize, eliminating a contam vector. 6. You can use extras to store left over munchies.
Cons.
1. There not Petris....
I havent had any contam issues w. them the lids seal well enough, and they stack inside each other for easy storage when there not in use.
GL and i hope you find something that works for you.

Yeah I looked for those but was in a rush I did ask a chick and she said no we don't have any(friday night she just wanted to go home)I couldn't find them thought. How did the 2 oz condiment containers work out. As far as working w/ them I found them way easier than Petris, and did you put micropore tape on them, the condiment cups)also one more did you put them in ziplock baggies. I appreciate all the help from everyone and I,m def. getting those Ziplock containers that seems to be the best of all worlds! But maybe I just have to get used to them(Petris) I hate putting the tape on! Maybe parafilm is easier?
