Lions mane on pine?
    #18931488 - 10/04/13 02:33 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I have found a mushroom which I believe to be lions mane or some similar Hericium. But all that I have read says that hericium grows on hard wood. These specimens were found on some sort of pine or spruce.

Habitat:
They were found on the roots of a dead pine tree and in the needles surrounding the roots.

Stem:
Not present.

Other information:
Small, about 1/2 in to an inch. Spikey like the lions mane I have seen in the supermarket. When I came across them this afternoon they had droplets of condensation on them which kind of mushed up the spikes when I picked them. Smells reminiscent of gem studded puffballs.

The inside is reminiscent of the texture of cooked chicken, fibrous but still slightly squishy.

idk. It is uncommon to very rare depending on your location, so it might be worth working with if you are serious and have a good idea of what you will do, and otherwise it might just be best not to disturb it!
