Habitat: Found growing in grass next to an old tree that was bare of bark and half gone. Other collection on a mound that most assuredly had a tree.
Gills: Yellow, attached
Stem: Bulbous at bottom on most. Fibrous, slightly lighter than cap. Pithy inside.
Cap: Variable sizes in cluster from .5 cm to 6-7 cm. Yellowish. Some round others misshapen.
Spore print color: Very important!
Bruising: Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
Other information: Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

Gymnopilus junonius is likely given their size. Where are you located?

I have been using this site for quite a while but this is my first post. I have learned a lot. Love mushrooms. I have actually found some boletus edulis in the last week. Tons of chanterelles and morels earlier this year. This is by far the best site for newbies and experienced hunters...(I am in between)

Some blue-green bruising on the younger specimens. Could they be validipes? The more I look into it, spectabilis seems unlikely. Any thoughts?

Those pins are huge and not even open yet except 1 that I see,has to be G.junonius a.k.a. spectabilis. Why do you think differently?

I was thinking validipes due to the lighter color. Lot of similarities I think. In the end either would be OK. Funny thing is that I spend lots of time looking for these with no luck. Today I am out driving on some errands and...well...two clusters! Spotted them at 35mph.

Can these be air dried successfully? What about storage?

Yes,but they will lose potency and taste awful. I would make tea and freeze it for later. Water bottles work good.

I dry mine, then chop/grind and store em in "00" size capsules in baggies @ 2gms a piece. You don't taste em at all that way and they store for 6mos. - a year (and then some, sometimes.) Hadn't noticed much of a potency loss from the tea I used to make back east. (Then again, that might be because I usually find luteofolius out here, they may be more potent generally.) This works pretty well for me because I find a lot more than I would want to consume and we've got all the other stronger varieties popping up out here at the same time.
If you find gobs and gobs of em, you might consider keeping 'em that way.

it is impossible to "guess" whether these are G. validipes or G. spectabilis from the current information. i will say that they do bear some similarities to both species. if we had more mature specimens, we might be able to take a better crack at it. also, micro would go a long way here.
with that being said, they are more than likely G. spectabilis, which is said to be bitter. G. validipes is said to be "mild."
G. validipes is likely a lot more "rare" than some people, seem to think.
at any rate, they are both active species...
if you do see these fruit again, please let them mature and dry a few specimens for me... i would love to look at them...

I have a cap that was opened fully. Spore print took all night. Rusty orange. Pretty big. Happy to send it to you. How does that work? Isn't that risky?
