What pH soil do liberty caps tend to grow in?
    #18931066 - 10/04/13 12:40 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I've been wondering about the best type of fields to find liberty caps as my hauls (if I can call them that) are not impressive. About 40 AT MOST in one trip. What pH soil do liberty caps best grow in and what plants indicate the pH of the soil best suited to liberty caps? Cheers.

My guess, since they're more often found in livestock fields, is it has less to do with pH and more to do with soil temp, moisture & nitrogen content(from the poo.) Look for 'em at the base of taller clumps of richly colored grass. The size of the grass allows for collection of rain and dew at their base and the depth of color is a good indicator of nitrogen levels.

edit to add: I'd assume that the more alkaline the soil, the better.

Not sure the pH question.... Do you normally test the pH in fields?

I agree, it's actually the grass it needs... Plus right temperature, moisture and prior spores!
