Like the one on the very right....so they just slide right out in one piece.
These are the jars I'm using... http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18918111#18918111 You're saying it's impossible to get them out in one piece every time?

ding ding. Surface area of a circle in relation to diameter. You get significant drops in surface area between a wide mouth and regular.

You should be fine, since you used wide-mouth. I think most use the half pint jars for faster colonization and easier removal. Just

Yes, and this is extremely important because we leave our grain jars open and exposed....

No one leaves them open. It's while they're being g2ged. Do I use the small ones?, No. But can I still see the obvious reasoning, Yes.

I can't....we do G2G transfers under sterile conditions....the size of the opening should not matter...

There's risk with a glove box or SAB. Even laminar flows are only 99.997 at 3 microns. Nothings perfect so limiting a risk is still possible.

Couldn't you though? It's sterile in there right.. Try it next time.

That guy don't get it lol. It's for when the jars are opened for transfers.

wow, lol i did not expect this thread to get this much discussion! the only thing i have to ask now is why does RR suggest not using plastic lids? I see a lot of lid teks that suggest plastic ones since they wont rust and wear down as much as the metal ones

I found an old quote from RR here:
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Regular mouth jars are better for grain spawn than wide mouth because the smaller opening gives less room for contaminants to enter during inoculation and grain to grain transfers. In addition, during grain to grain transfers, the grains pour from a regular mouth jar better than a wide mouth with less chance of spilling. RR
Now, I don't know if the probability of contamination using standard-mouthed vs wide-mouthed jars is statistically significant, but I guess caution is usually the better part of valor. With good procedure, though, the difference might not be noticeable.
The pouring benefit sounds intriguing. Going to buy some extra jars today, and will have to try some standard.
Standard to Wide for transfers may be a good alternative if you're confident in your environment/procedure.

Lol....still don't get it..... If the air is clean enough to do transfers with regular mouth jars.... Then the air is clean enough for wide mouth jars...
Each jar is open for about a second... Does that half inch really make that bigof a difference?

I tend to agree with you, but I'm a noob. And the math to find the statistical significance of contamination rates is beyond me. (Well, since I haven't used it in 30 years and forgotten most of it, it's now beyond me.)
We are a paranoid people, though....

I don't know the size difference between the two but. diameter to surface area 3"= ~9 4"= ~12
~33% bigger opening is a whole lot more.
With such little suspended particles is it negligible? Maybe

The search function does reveal the following regarding plastic lids from some trusted cultivators:
RogerRabbit
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: I don't like them because they don't seal well. I've also had several plastic lids that flew off during shaking, which dumps my colonizing grain all over the carpet. A bit of rust hurts nothing. RR
Fooman
Quote:
FooMan said: The regular mouth PP5 lids some of the sponsors sell are great, but only come in regular mouth The regular and wide mouth plastic lids Ball sells at stores (in 8 packs) for their canning jars are prone to cracking, warping and as was already mentioned, require a gasket for an air/water tight seal, but they'll do the job.
TranscendingLife
Quote:
TranscendingLife said: I like metal better. Plastic are a PITA, IME. You have to get the rubber gasket for the lid to actually seal to the jar. They're harder to drill, slip more & don't tighten as snug as I like my jars.
Your mileage may vary...
