Ganoderma applanatum?
    #18927371 - 10/03/13 06:59 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello, this is my first post to the shroomery so please forgive me if my format is off. I found this mushroom growing on a dead tree and suspect that it is Ganoderma applanatum. The underside readily turns brown when scratched.

Habitat:
It was found growing on a fairly decomposed tree. Last year I pulled a mushroom which I thought was Fomes fomentarius off from the very same tree, but it may be the same as this years mushroom. The tree is riddled with mushroom growth, both at its base and up its trunk.

Gills:
Small pores.

Stem:
non present

Cap:
About 3 to 4 inches. Light brown color.

Spore print color:
Was not able to get one.

Bruising:
The underside bruised a dark brown.

Well, I don't know Inonotus, but looking at some pics just now, the ones I looked at had huge pores...  This pretty much looks like applanatum to me...  I think there may be environmental factors that affect the visual appearance of the pores, or age.  I've had 'em look just like this, but also very fine and smooth.  And the dark brown bruising fits, but I don't much about how common that is across shelf fungus.

But youse guyz are the more experienced by a long shot...  I have kinda fixated on the conks for some reason, tho'.

I will see about getting some better pictures and maybe a spore print tomorrow.

This is a side view of it while still on the tree.

The bottom bruises brown enough to scratch a decent picture into.

Cut in half, the mushroom was rather woody.

And I am currently waiting on a spore print.

Ultimately I was unable to get a spore print. I think it may have been premature.
