Federal drug charges for Bellevue man involved in 'Silk Road'Quote:
BELLEVUE, Wash. - A Bellevue man who sold drugs using an online black market known as Silk Road now faces federal drug charges, Homeland Security agents say.
According to court documents, 40-year-old Steven Sadler hid his identity using the profile "Nod," and used a fake name to purchase mailboxes at several UPS stores in Washington.
Sadler sent the drugs through the U.S. Mail, where a drug detection dog alerted authorities to an express mail package. Inside, Post Office inspectors found heroin hidden in a birthday card, and scented markers.
Investigators say they used a return address on some of the boxes to track down Sadler, and installed tracking devices on Sadler and his co-defendant's vehicles. During surveillance, the cars traveled to at least 38 Post Offices in the Seattle area.
Court documents show Silk Road sold 1.2 billion dollars worth of drugs and illegal services in about three years.
The Silk Road website protected users with an encryption technique called "onion routing," which is designed to make it "practically impossible to physically locate the computers hosting or accessing websites on the network," court papers said. One listing for heroin promised buyers "all rock, no powder, vacuum sealed and stealth shipping," and had a community forum below where one person commented, "Quality is superb."
"They were comfortable operating in that environment because they felt that they enjoyed complete anonymity," said Jan Fedarcyk, Former Assistant Director with the FBI.
Agents in Seattle eventually connected Silk Road to Sadler after they intercepted a package addressed to someone in Alaska. The recipient told agents where he purchased the drugs from "NOD" on Silk Road.
The FBI recently shutdown the Silk Road website after a two-year undercover operation, and also arrested Ross Ulbricht, the California man who operated the online black market. FBI agents found him in the science fiction section of a small branch of the San Francisco public library, chatting online.
His final mistake, according to the court papers, was ordering fake identification documents from a Silk Road vendor from Canada. One of the nine documents was a California driver's license with Ulbricht's photograph, birthdate but a different name. The package was intercepted at the border during a routine U.S. Customs search.
"Very sophisticated, very intellectual individual who took those skills and talents and developed an online website that marketed illegal goods, illegal services," FBI's Fedarcyk said.
As of July, there were nearly 1 million registered users of the site from the United States, Germany, Russia, Australia and elsewhere around the globe, the court papers said.
And so it begins.

it seems a little too convenient that they catch DPR through "routine" mail inspection, and now this vendor Nod is taken down by mail interception again. Coincidence, Or either someone is ratting people out, or the fbi hacked them, but dont want to state they hacked such a secure system, since they are still doing damage control surrounding them spying on fucking everyone.

These situations sound more like personal mistakes made by vendors.
Perhaps this customer in Alaska was already having their mail monitored and this "routine" inspection was only routine for this particular recipient. It only takes one little detail to fuck everything up.
There are a few vendors that I would love to hear about after the dust settles. Some of the quantities of product moving on the Road were impressive and I can't imagine the feds are going to let those guys slide away.
Nod was a small fry as far as the heroin vendors go. Who wants to pay for tar when you can have powder for the same price

How could the feds trace back the return address when all vendors are advised to use a fake return address?

I expect more busts like these given the downfall of the silk road.
If you were a vendor on there, I really hope you already cleaned house, closed any mail boxes, and moved.

They were watching him cause he fucked up, this was going on a while before SR came down. They just stopped the investigation because SR is down so their is no more info to get. They watch dealers all the time trying to get bigger fish.

If you would read the article you would see that they exploited an old version of Firefox, not the Tor network. Nice try though.

They would just have to watch and see what person is going to 38 post offices around seattle every week.. That is kind of suspicious in and of itself

Mail in Alaska gets more scrunity than other states because of it's remotenes. You can't just drive drugs in so its mail or airports, and both are watched closely. And vendors using PO boxes for return address is stupid. Lost/stolen packages are a write off, everyone know that. Trying to claim a package of drugs returned to sender is beyond stupid.

Something doesn't seem quite right here, and I'm wondering how they actually got this guy.

The way this worded, it almost seems like they're implying this was somehow his downfall. So what, they got the pseudonym of an online vendor from a random bust? They could have gotten his screen name from SR itself. I fail to see how this is relevant, at all. But they do also say this:
Quote:
Investigators say they used a return address on some of the boxes to track down Sadler, and installed tracking devices on Sadler and his co-defendant's vehicles. During surveillance, the cars traveled to at least 38 Post Offices in the Seattle area.
Okay, that sounds a bit more reasonable.... but still doesn't quite make sense. Like a big time SR vendor is going to just use his real return address? Not likely.
Part of me wonders if this isn't all bullshit, and they actually somehow got his info from the SR servers, maybe in a private message...? Either that or he put the return as a neighbor's house, or somewhere he could watch.... IDK. Seems odd.
