Effect of air as it is bubbled through a H2O2/H2O solution..
    #1892826 - 09/08/03 03:08 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

Hydrogen peroxide is simply water with an extra oxygen molecule. Thus, if you seperate that oxygen molecule, you are left with oxygen and water. My question is how does this occur? I know that light and heat above 85F are, according to the bottle, break down H2O2. Keeping this in mind, what are your thoughts on the effect of 'regular' indoor air if it is pumped through (via an aquarium bubbler and a fish stone)? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, here aer some questions I have.

Do you think that the air would be, due to any of the above mentioned factors, oxygenated? That is to say, would the oxygen content of it (on a ppm basis) be higher than that of the air the bubbler took in? Would the air be in any way sanitized? just tossing ideas out there, all thoughts are welcome

if your worried about stale air grab an air ioniser, they recharge the molecules in oxygen.hefa filters clean it.

This would be a very expensive way to oxygenate air.

> Hydrogen peroxide is simply water with an extra oxygen molecule.

Its an extra oxygen atom, not molecule...

... and table salt is simple sodium with an extra cholorine atom. The sum of parts is often more complex than the parts. Hydrogen peroxide is not simply water with excess oxygen, it is a very different beast than water.

>Thus, if you seperate that oxygen molecule, you are left with oxygen and water. My question is how does this occur?

2 H2O2 --- heat ---> 2 H2O + O2

> This would be a very expensive way to oxygenate air.

Yes it would be. It would probably be cheaper to buy liquid nitrogen and condense liquid oxygen out of the air... or cheaper yet would be simple to buy a tank of oxygen... it isn't illegal or that expensive.

(On a side note, liquid oxygen, which looks like water, is paramagnetic and can be pulled around like iron filings with a magnet... very cool!)

> they recharge the molecules in oxygen

What does that mean?

I think he meant "recharge the air with oxygen molecules". He ain't no chemist, that's for sure! But you have to give the guy credit for his imagination.

if mycella has enzymes to naturally break h202 into h20 and oxygen then is it safe to assume that mycella can grow and live in pure h202 because it will be able to form its own oxygen to breathe and water to absorb?

Well, you could not add H2O2 in the first place. If you want more O2 in the media all you have to do is get it to constantly shake -- this is called submerged culture and an orbital shaker is usually used for this. All you really need, however, is a platform attached to a metal rod that's attached to the outside of a disk attached to a motor so it shakes the media.

BTW -- I bet that device would cost $500 + if sold by Fisher, lol.

no way considering a spore print is around AU$30
I bought a hefa fan with a built in ioniser for AU$77 at dick smith electronics [url]www.dsa.com.au
the hefa filter is disposable after 3 months and you buy new ones for $15.
they are used for sick rooms and stuff.

so vibration stops oxydation?

No -- something gets oxidized when it loses an electron -- H2O2 causes this to happen. All the shaking does is dissolve oxygen into the media -- sort of like pushing air into a fishtank so the fish can breathe.
