Lay out 'recent history' as you wish, here is my list.

VideoCD/Mpeg1 compression.. Jesus Fucking Christ this looks terrible, _just_ good enough for porn.

Worst one... THe Microsoft Corperation...

Smart Bombs are better than stupid ones, at least they are more accurate so there are *less* civialian casualties. Nucular/Hydrogen bombs though, now thats a fucking technological disaster.

oh and another one.. digital synthesizers of the 80's and techno music!

How is MS bad? They dominate the home OS market, created the greatest console ever, and donate regularly to charity.

LOL, they dominate the home OS market becuase they broke competition laws and have monopolised the industry. Although Windows' fresh and easy to use look was also a major factor. The "greatest" console ever is easily debatable.
Also a lot of businesses donate to chairty, Bill Gates himself has given shitloads of cash to good causes, as do a lot of normal people too so its not really a defense for MS.

For the number of people and companies they have exploited over the years they should be donating a lot more.

I'd agree with the nuclear bomb.....

The difference between MPEG2 and MPEG1 is almost insignificant. If you have seen poor quality video from MPEG1 compression, it is the fault of the compressor, not the standard.

This is a joke, correct?

Insignificant difference?

I've seen a good lot of commercial VCD's, I would hope the studios themselves don't fuck it up, the most recent one that caused me to hate it was JFK, three hours and some on three CDs, about 2gig in all (yeah, original and rented).. that would be about 9gig or more on DVD/MPEG2, and I have never seen any DVD this weak, even pirated damn DVDs.

Have you really ever seen commercial VCDs?

> Have you really ever seen commercial VCDs?

I have written software to do MPEG I and MPEG II compression... back before DVDs existed for a company that used to produce VCDs. Yes, I have seen commercial VCDs... The difference between MPEG1 and MPEG2 are very minor. Large quantitization values and poor motion vector creation will result in large losses and lots of defects regardless of the standard used. MPEG2 adds variable bitrate encoding, mp3 audio, and 12-bit pels instead of 8-bit pels.

The big difference is the storage medium. You get a whopping 650 meg with a CDROM vs 8GB (or more) with a DVD. If you have more space to store data, you can increase you bitrate which reduces your losses which results in a better looking, better sounding encoded movie.

I have a side-by-side comparison of MPEG1 and MPEG2 encoded video that I will try to find for you. I encoded the trailer to Misson Impossible (with permission from the Studio, they sent the trailer to me before the movie came out on beta... this gives the time frame for when I was writing mpeg encoders) with both and gave them the same space to fit into. With a trained eye/ear, I could barely tell the difference... various people with an untrained eye/ear could not tell the difference.

Xbox is the greatest console ever.
Why? because it can emulate Nes / Snes / SMS / Gens / PSX / N64 / C64 / Amiga / DOS / Windows / *Nix / Arcade / Neo-Geo / Atari / GB(A) / PCE / Wonderswan and more...

Not to mention with a 120gb harddisk drive, all the movies in DIvX format you could ever want.

oh, HALO too.

Now how the fuck isnt it the greatest console ever?

I suppose I'll correct myself, VCDs suck
If the difference between MPEG1/2 isn't that great as you say, why do people keep telling me SVCDs (M2 I believe) are so much superior? I haven't seen any commercial ones anywhere but I haven't been looking, and all SVCDs I've downloaded seem to be mislabeled as they were DivX/XviD/things like that.

(I love throwing half-educated opinions around, don't mind me!)

Oh yeah, cuneiform writing, that shit had no future.

Well....the reason the XBOX can do all that shit is because of the simple fact that it has a harddrive, the PS2 has a HD bay and it will be availiable in the near future, they are already out in japan. I Imagine they will then have the same capability, and another thing...nobody can argue the FACT that the PS2 has and always will have the best array of games.

The harddrive has nothing to do with it, you can run the games all from DVD-R or CD-RW if you like, having a 120gig harddrive just makes things sooo much more.,...elite (having all your games/movies on disk, and NEVER having to swap CD, or get up to turn it off )

The xbox blows away the competition in hardware, the harddisk is just a bonus.

PS: quantity != quality.....the PS2 is living proof of that.
BUT, if you want to say that, technically you can play more games on the xbox than ps2. (100,000+ games)

Not to mention Xbox online makes ps2 'online' look like a fucking joke.

I don't see ps2 or gamecube on that list....both of which have MUCH better exclusive titles(especially gamecube)...pretty much everything besides halo that you can get on xbox either sucks or you can get it on the other consoles

xbox is the worse console right now IMO and it dosen't even come close to some of the oldies....and emulating them is not the same....the games may play just as well but fact remains there old now

Better exclusives? are you smokikng crack?

MS owns Bungie.
MS owns Rare now (Nintendos BEST dev)
Ms might as WELL own Team Ninja (in the words of the owner "they will only dev for the best console", aka Xbox) ...Ninja Gaiden, DOA series anyone?

Not to mention Xbox is the only console that will play the following games in the future:
Otogi? Sudeki? Fable? Halo 2? Doom 3? Half life 2? B.C.?

....
Now, what does PS2 have? GTA? sorry, but its coming to Xbox next month, with texture and model and various improvements (the PS2 graphics are pathetic....not to mention load times)

Gamecube? Sure, I wont deny if you are a 10 year old kid and like playing Pokemon/Mario games...it has the best 'exclusives'

*deep breath*

Not to mention: Sure, most games are multi platform, but the thing is...they look better on Xbox! yesyes, most games sport a constant 60fps on xbox, VS 30fps on the other consoles, better texture compression techniques, the Xbox GPU wipes the floor with the competition.

Annnnnnnnnnnd Custom soundtracks - the ability to rip your own music onto the harddisk, and play them in games, instead of the normal crappy music (good for sport games)

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd As a developer, i would have to say developing for the Xbox is definately the best. The XDK itself is soo nicely documented, and the debug kit is great, the kit itself looks damn elite also. Cant go wrong with C++/DX

I agree, Microsofts Monopoly has set back computer operating systems by years and years.. And pretty soon by using windows you grant uncle bill access to your system, you give them the authority to tell you what you can and cant put on your system, you will be paying monthly to use your computer, forget using a computer without an Internet connection, without one you wont be able to run applications. Microsofts long term plans are essentially to turn computer systems in to simple terminals, everything you'll be using will be on a server located at one of the Microsoft facilities. Its evident they have already begun testing if you've seen the ads offering 3 hours access to terminal to their visual studio .net services.

And I haven't even begun to elaborate on the insecurities in general, there was no reason in the world the blaster virus did as much damage as it did, dcom never should have shipped enabled nor should the ports have been left open to the world by default. I, as well as several people i know, couldnt even reinstall windows without getting hit by it by the time it was done booting for the first time.

Before anyone complains that the blaster could be removed easily and did no damage, dont forget that the box has been compromised and now need the OS reinstalled, thats a lot of lost productivity.
