Kayaking Bioluminescence

For the past 4 years I have regularly gone out to kayak during the bioluminescent blooms. Was wondering if anyone else here on shroomery has gone out to see it? For that matter if there are any other kayakers here?
The last 2 summers I have Organized Bio Kayak Camping Trips, Maybe this coming summer I could plan another trip, but this time invite some new friends ???
If anyone is heavily interested, let me know... Its an amazing experience.
For those that enjoy fishing, its a way to see how many fish are really in the water... sooooo many fish... some real giants out there still.

It happens all over the world. Its often associated with Red Tides. They are little single celled organisms, if you watched the NG video then they explained all that.. When is the question, its not entirely predictable. The blooms tend to be from spring through fall, peaking mid-late summer. However, in other parts of the world, like PR, its all year round. It can vary in color and intensity(density). Its best seen on New Moons or nights where the moon has set early. You have to wait for it to be completely dark, at least an hour or 2 after sunset. Keep your back to any lights... places away from light pollution is much better. If you can get on top of the water, like with a kayak, it becomes a whole other experience. Its like boating on billions of stars with fireworks shooting away from you. Bat Rays, Sharks and cruiser fish can be seen in full-detail, as if someone rubbed them with UV ink and stuck them under a black light....
Its amazing stuff. On level with the Auroras.

there are tons of other videos online too... I have been hunting them down for years... however, very few videos show anything more than crashing waves and dunking rocks. I inspired Tim King to come up this way to try and film it on the calm dark waters here... he came... but it was so dark that his camera couldn't focus on anything... its extremely hard to capture.. he had an amazing experience, but no footage, hella bummed.

I would do nearly anything to be on a beach watching glowing waves crash, or to kayak through water that glows with every paddle splash
Alas, my life probably will never be such

We've had a Viking Nemo 2+1 for about 5yrs or so now.

We used to live on an estuary that wasn't far from the heads out into the ocean. My wife and I would throw our 6yr old at the time in the middle and we'd go adventuring. Typical saltwater stuff, dolphins etc - and you could pull up practically anything when fishing. It was a good environment to cut our teeth on.
These days we live out in the sticks, but right on a nice freshwater river that runs down from a world heritage rainforest (lined for miles and miles and miles with nothing but pastures, cattle and actives).
I'm the only one that goes out anymore, so it's a bit of a barge but serves me well. It's good for stealth hunting and nighttime out on the river is incredible. I also have my 'special spot' which has an old abandoned tree house up a little off-shoot of the river. It's bliss, and it's where I go to drink some 'OJ' and work some shit out.
Great to see another Kayak fan too. There's just something about it hey?

That looks like an amazing experience. I got a kayak a few months back, too bad I am in the middle of the country in Illinois not by any oceans. That is something I would make a trip out for. What part of the summer does this happen during?
edit - I read your post where you explained it, so don't worry about my when is it question. Is the PR you mention Puerto Rico? Because I will be there for a week and a half over new years.

I've seen it in Cape Hatteras, NC, USA. I walked into the water and most of the glowing in the surf were sand crabs. We were under the influence at the time and we just picked them up and it was astounding.
We walked through the "puddles" that the high tide leaves behind when it recedes and our footprints were glowing as we walked through them.
I couldn't have thought of a better place to be.

Now that I think back I remember seeing this happen on the beach in Humboldt County. I remember running around on the sand and my footprints would glow, we had no idea why back then though.

Yes! There definitely is... I have been hooked since my first experience. I mostly go ocean kayaking, unless I get time during the summers to go up to the high altitude mountain lakes... i love being able to fish off my kayak, look down into 75ft of crystal clear water and observe the giant trout I am fishing for inspect my line and never bite. lol..
I would really like to do some more surf kayaking... 3ft swell is about the biggest I have been out on.. but I would love to get on some bigger waves!

But, one time me and my now ex gf got stoned and kayaked up a river and into a small canyon full of glowworms, the walls --no exaggeration-- looked like cities at night from space...was some real avatar sheit. It was starless night too, we could navigate the canyon completely from the light of the glowworms.

Was the river glowing too?!?
This sounds amazing.. i have yet to see the glow caves and such...
We do have glow worms here on my property, not sure they are the same as the ones you have seen in the canyon... they come out in winter on super cold nights... the roads and hillsides are sometimes covered in them.. but there seems to be less of them every year... perhaps because the winters have been warmer in recent years.

Yes, thats what I meant by PR. Its Mosquito Bay, lol.... often called Bio Bay now... glows year round, though it may vary in intensity. Vieques PR Bio Bay Tours There may be several companies that provide tours, so maybe shop around.

A few weeks ago it was glowing in Bodega bay really good.. I could see it while we were fishing off the pier... very dense... we went coast side and there was barely any glow at all...
For the past 5 years I have been observing it in the bays and coast side... always variable.. sometimes its bright at the coast, and nothing in the bays... sometimes bright in the bays and nothing at the coast... sometimes both, sometimes neither... its still very unpredictable.. I have been following tides, currents, ocean temps / air temps, etc etc... feel like a pattern is starting to surface... but as with all things in nature, it is ever changing and patterns will constantly evolve/morph... may never be able to fully understand or predict this occurrence.
-But I got it nailed down enough to be able to predict the perfect dates in the summer to set up my annual Bio camping/kayaking trip for Tomales Bay... each yeah it has been a success... but I have to say, the nights I have gone out for random night paddles have been the most eventful... for some reason the bay rays and sharks are never around for the trip and my friends have yet to see them in the bioluminescence... by far the most awesome things I have seen... you can see them so clearly, its unreal.... still waiting to see a grey whale in the bioluminescence. . . .

We have found glowing sticks of wood and trunks of trees glowing while under the influence.
We had a report of a young boy finding a whole tree, 75 feet tall glowing. I was out of town and missed it.

?
Elaborate? ....what kinda of tree?
They are able to make trees glow now... they can make any plant glow, any color and they can even control how bright it glows... DNA sequencing stuff.. kinda scary but super intriguing... there is a street light project, to replace street lights with glowing trees.... -However, I wonder about the possible consequences of releasing something like this into the natural environment.... I imagine there are many good and bad possibilities... all in all, interesting.

Bodega Bay is glowing really good right now... went out a few nights ago, moonless, foggy, but its there, particularly in the bay... gotta walk the sand and get close to the water to see it though... relatively dense, worth checking out if you find yourself out at the coast in Coma County.... the beach south of the marina pier was collecting it pretty well.
