What kind of shroom is this? Is it active?
    #18927951 - 10/03/13 08:39 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I am a first timer and I went hunting today and these were the best looking ones I found that I thought looked similar to actives but I'm not sure. They were found on dead decaying trees/stumps. white gills and stems on what I found and brown cap with nipple. here are some pics could someone please identify this for me. I am currently trying to get a spore sample but id like to test one if it is active. Help? btw it was found in north carolina I have been told there are 7 active shrooms that can be found in nc.

probably need to do downsize the image.  On top of that, you might not be able to retrieve the file directly from your camera, and might have to first save it onto a PC.

Hi and welcome to The Shroomery!

I suggest looking at this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12412007
Intro to hunting... And read how to make a spore print... Very helpful

Here is how to make an ID request: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5731447

Here is how to post pictures in your posts
http://www.shroomery.org/5286/How-do-I-put-pictures-in-my-post
You can now do it from a smart phone same way

Good hunting!

It just doesn't look like any type of active, and AFAIK none leave brown prints. Check this out for examples of what they do look like. And consult this: An overview on how to find Psilocybin Mushrooms.

Nah, I don't know much compared to a lot of the regular denizens here... I've been an amateur hunter of actives for a while in a lot of different areas/climates, so I can usually pick them out pretty well, but I'm far from a mycologist. The way I learn best is by digging through the info myself and doing my damnedest to determine what I'm looking at before posting here, most of the time. I usually use Identification Keys like MycoKey to figure it out. Usually, by the time I'm done there, I don't need to post up here and ask, (although as a very noob, I'd use the Trusted Identifiers on this site every time until I was sure I was using the keys properly,) and I learn a slew about mushrooms while I'm at it. A really good way to start being able to pick out actives and leave the rest is by going through this sub-forum, M H&I, looking at ID requests in your area a couple of times a day, looking at pics and descriptions and reading what the Trusted Identifiers say (along with using those first two links I gave you).

^^^^^^^^^^^ this is what it takes to make sure you're not taking your life in your hands by munching random fungi. It takes less time if all you want are actives, but it still takes a while - there's a lot to learn.

Try and take pictures that are not blurry randy.

are any of these that I have posted active?

heres the last one. prob more hunting in the next couple days and tomorrow I will have spore prints.

This one looks like Lepiota species  ive found better then 100 different mushrooms around where Im from. None of them were ACTIVE so to speak. If your looking to learn this is the right site! Take some time to post proper as you can which I see your doing ok so far on that and respect the TIs and other members. They're very intuitive and educate and full of experience! They're also very tired of people not listening and being patient enough to help them help you  nice finds. Keep it up!

I have been told there are 7 different active mushrooms in nc. I have only collected 6 so far and I suppose none are active.. I haven't had the chance to search any cow pastures. any advice on hunting for actives? actives are the ones I really want to learn about.

Since you are looking for actives, then - Growing from wood and woodland debris, you should study up and search for:

Gymnopilus species (some are active)
Psilocybe caerulipes

In cow pastures:

Panaeolus species (some are active)
Psilocybe cubensis

Always post good ID requests, and wait for trusted identifiers, spore prints and good pics of the mushrooms at all angles are important.

Whatever time is most comfortable for you, because there is no other reason why one part of the day is better than another.  Good light helps to spot them, but too bright might not be as good, because of glare.  Other than that it doesn't really matter what time of day.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_caerulipes#Habitat

Read this, for starters, and then look for them.  It says they can be found from late June to December, growing on wood debris and fallen logs. (birch, beech, and maple)  Have fun.

Wow.

I feel like people on this site have gained a lot of patience. If this thread had been posted last year or two years ago there would have been many more grumpy comments.

Good on everyone for being so helpful, and Good on the OP for learning how to post pics. Maybe try reading up on the guidelines before posting random questions and pics without id forms all over a thread again.

My heart is warmed!

--------------------
I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

Pluteus. That's a wet print. It will pinken up as it dries.
