A word of caution when using a bike tire to shake/break up spawn

I like to treat everything RR says like the bible truth (agnostic bible, lol).
However, I was using my bike tire to shake some jars that were between 25 and 50% colonized and it broke one!
I've never let the pressure out of my PC early (I let it cool by itself).
So, even though RR says to use a bike tire one cannot hit it as hard as they like. LOL
One the bright side, it filled the room with the smell of mushroomey goodness, so I now have two ways to verify the jars are doing okay (sight, and a more than a faint hint of smell).
Please learn from my mistake!!

Could have also been a flawed jar

Very true. It was a name brand Bernardin.
How do they let flawed jars off the production line? Couldn't people get sick if they used these for canning food and theres a flaw in it?
Anywho, you're probably right.
I was also probably smacking it a little harder than I should I have been.
Just trying to warn other noobs like me
That jar smelled so delicious when it broke, what a shame.
Ah well, plenty more where that came from

Maybe because the tire was directly on the ground the force had nowhere to end up but in the jar?

When using a bike tire it is better to have it in the air.

Yowch...
I use a bike tire too, but before I start on the bike tire I take my jars and firmly yet gently tap them on my hard, wooden desk. I find that if you tap all the way around the bottom edge of the jar against a hard surface, it helps the myc to break free from the sides of the glass and to fracture the cake as a whole. (It's like using a butter knife to tap around the edge of the lid on a pickle jar you can't open. You know what I'm talking about.)
I use "Ball" brand glass mason jars by the way.

The reason you broke the jar is because the bike tire was not fully inflated, thus the jar compressed the tire and hit the rim.
This is why in the video it says to use a 'well inflated bike tire'. I pump my bike tire up just before using every time because they always lose some air. Make the tire rock hard before using, ie +/- 60 lbs. RR

I ride on pretty technical stuff, the tire has zero give.
I guess I'll get a third wheel and over inflate it for next time.
Thanks.

If the tire was fully inflated, then the jar had a flaw. Mason jars are usually good for a few dozen cycles, but not always. Cheaper jars are often lucky to last a few heat/cool cycles. Just remember even the best mason jars will need to be replaced eventually. RR
