I have a treat for you guys!
A new mexicana strain from San Agustín Loxicha (The Lox)
Cleaned up from Alan's hunts in 2012,
Thanks Alan!
Here is the mushroom observer post to reference the original specimen...
MO # 114469
http://mushroomobserver.org/114469

Back in January of this year I got to plating up the fragments Alan sent.....
It took 14 days to germinate;

1st transfer...

Clean mexicana cultures ready to grow out;

----
Grow #1
Notes:
Fruited very very slowly. It took 35 days for pins. It was an awfully nice surprise because I really didn't think it was going to fruit. I have never seen a mexicana take that long so when I saw a pin in the casing I was a pretty happy guy.
The fruits on the first round had a typical mex look but the fruits were much more dense and hardy than any mex strain I have grown. This did not occur on the 2nd grow from ms, only 'normal' mex fruits grew on the second round.
Here are the pictures of my first grow attempt with the strain....

Sclerotia

1st generation Printing / Dried Fruits
Grow #2
This one went a lot more smoothly. First pins after 10 days,...
Day 1

Day 3

Day 5

Day 6

I have been short handing the strain 'The Lox' after the location of collection and have been calling it by that name.
2nd generation Lox mexicana prints! We got a new strain of mexicana!
I will try and take a few more in the further flushes and see if I can get a few handed out here but they were in very high demand over at my site so all in these pix are spoken for already.

More than a few old hands have already been given these prints so hopefully we will see more of this strain in the near future,
I will try and pop in and update as the blocks keep moving along,
-PP.>

Awesome! Were you able to figure out what made grow#1 so odd both in how long it took for pinning to initiate and the shape of the fruits?

To be honest I am not really all that sure. I suspect that it may be because the culture was a tissue revival rather than spore germination. The reason I think this is because of the fact that it took so long to grow and gave me a hard time. It didn't seem like a typical ms grow. It seemed more like an unhealthy clone but I could be wrong.
There were 2 grow attempts prior to 'grow #1' that I hadn't mentioned that failed to fruit. So really 'grow #1' was grow #3, one of which was the grow that produced the sclerotia in the pics.
I would say maybe you could attribute it to the substrate but I used a straw/chicken poo/corn debris compost for all the grows so it probably wasn't the cause. That and the fact that the clone I took from grow #1 that I also hadn't mentioned showed the same odd growth rate and hardiness of the fruits.
Over all it is a pretty cool mexicana strain but the best thing about them is the little nipples they have when they are young. I'm a sucker for nippled Psilocybes.
I attached a few pix of the fruits from the clone I took from grow #1...
Their stipes and the thickness of the caps are more like hoogs or caerus than any mexicana I have grown. The closest I have seen to this hardiness in a mexicana is the Chicon Nindo strain. That is another great mexicana strain.
I really hope to see the trait again from this strain but who knows....

Wait, you can clone from dried specimens?
Off topic, but I thought for some reason I had read that it was extremely difficult to do such a thing.
Either way, awesome work PP, nice to see around these parts. I'm over on Myco-Tek as well, I like it over there.

I have a new block fruiting of this strain.. Rather disappointing results but I must admit it has been neglected. oh well, I figured I would post it anyway for the heck of it... lol.
Edit: The block in the back is another mexicana strain from Alan that captain future grew out last year..

Hey professor What all are you doing with that tub you have those blocks in to keep humidity and FAE right and what exactly does it entail? BTW Great job and when would a print Loxicha be available to the public?

The FAE/humidity I control with a fish tank bubbler and manual fanning/misting the sides 2 times a day.
Like I said this last block got neglected. Only the bubbler ran and I didn't open the tub at all for air exchange or misting or anything.
The concept is just keeping moving water inside the chamber by bubbling air through a mason jar with water in it. By doing this I found I need to mist the chamber and exchange the air a lot less.
The reason I rock a mono style fruiting chamber instead of a shotgun is because most the species I grow take a long time to fruit. I've found it a lot more common to get pests in my casing when I use shotguns because of the holes and the fact that the casings just sit there so I started using this method and they are easier to control.
I may take a couple prints off this block. If not They are around. I gave 20 or so out on my website a month or so ago so grows should start surfacing soon I would think, at least over there anyway....
