spawning brf cakes to bulk- a few questions

first off, I've been reading a lot of mixed opinions about this technique lately, like contams are more likely? Is it worth it? and also, I would be using the classic one brick coir, 2 quarts verm, handful of gypsum for the bulk substrate in what I believe is a 58qt monotub, how many half pint cakes will I need to spawn to this mix to get proper ratio/amount? thanks, you guys rock.

You would need about 20 cakes for that much spawn. 25 or 30 cakes would be even better. I personally don't know how well it works because I have never tried it. I just use grain spawn. Brf cakes are a pain in the ass to crumble. Those little bastards are tough

I would use 3 quarts of fine verm, 5.5 quarts of water, and one brick of coir, and 1 cup of gypsum.
I have never tried it either but I've wanted to.. Maybe you should try it and let us know how it goes?? Other have done it and were succesful.

Just a small handful of gypsum will do. I never measure it but 1 cup sounds like a bit much
I use 1 brick, 2 qts of verm, 5 qts of water, and a handful of gypsum with 6 qts of grain spawn in a 66qt tub

I shall.
do you just break the cakes up as much as you possibly can by hand? planning on doing 20 cakes... or 22 actually.

I think some people use a cheese grater. The smaller the pieces the more inoculation points there will be

ah good idea. so a couple of general pf tek questions I'm gonna throw at you guys... after injecting through the tape (masking tape, in my case) do you cover the holes with more tape? and also how long is necessary to leave your jars cooling in the PC/pot before you remove them? I would be letting them cool for 24 hours but I need the PC/pot for more jars...

Masking tape is not breathable, so that means don't use it.
Let the jars cool to room temp.

Do not cover the holes back up with tape. Leave them uncovered and the foil off so they can get proper gas exchange. Leaving the holes covered also makes your dry verm layer get damp which is a bad thing
Let the pc decompress on its own before removing jars

really? every pf tek I've read has said masking tape is okay, wouldn't gas exchange occur through the holes poked by the needles as psilly said?

Yes, but not if you sealed it back up after inoculation.
Yes, a lot of teks say to use masking tape for some reason, but it can seal your jars and create a vacuum, sucking an entire syringe dry upon initial penetration......it has happened before.
