King Oysters success *PICS* * 1
    #18925957 - 10/03/13 01:43 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

wheat berries/wbs spawned to coir or adler chips. Tried all combos, they behave the same.

Coir seems to produce as well as adler chips for me. Spawn rates were about 25% by wet volume.

older block, 2.8kg total wet weight, produced 700g wet on first flush.
largest was 220g, followed by a 140g. Girlfirend's hand for reference

newer blocks (on a shelf covered in a humidity tent)

Aren't you worried about mushrooms eating your wooden shelves?

@liamtheloser: Not worried, the shelves were cheap. Metal ones would have cost 5x more, and I am not sure I will be living here in a year, so I try to keep that in mind when purchasing stuff like furniture.

Yes, 14 posts but a lot of reading. My first tries were full of failure, when i was trying to get my first colonised jar of grain.

The tek that succeeded was making LC with a sterile syringe. 4g honey to 100ml of water, a 20ml syringe with a 2mm thick needle. I cut the mushroom with a sterile knife to make a clean entry point. I remove the needle cover at the last second, I stab and twist, draw air into the syringe while still in the mushroom(mushroom acts as a filter) so i can later push the piece out. I inject into jars PCed at 20 PSI for 20min. Success rates for this tek have been 100% when done fast. I do it on the kitchen counter in a corner with still air. This tek did not work out too well in the beginning, when I was slow and when i flamed the needle and stopped for various other steps. Now, after inoculating one jar, i still use the syringe as is for 1-2 more jars, without flaming in between. I believe flaming helps, but will also stir the air, as hot air goes up and pulls particles from below - a risk i rather not take, especially if needle is fresh out of the pack. I also make sure all my doors and windows are closed, and I tell my GF to stand still or to not come in during this phase(i have done it before without te warming and t failed 100%). I have mouldy carrots in my kitchen half the time, this is standard fresh produce you get in Berlin supermarkets, so no way around that.

The lids have a single 3mm wide hole. For LC, I cover the hole with wax after injecting the piece. Jars are half full, so they can have air inside.

FOr grain, I PC at 20 psi for 90-120min, after grain had soaked for 14-24 hours. When soaking for 24+ hours, I give it a simmer in between.

SOmetimes I used brown rice, I just boil it till the first kernels burst.

If my grain is too wet before PC-ing, I add a teaspoon of dry brown rice to the bottom of the jar to soak any extra humidity. I prefer grain a little bit dry rather than a bit wet. Apparently brown rice does not ahve endospores, so it doesn't really need a soak.

For grain jars, I use the same lid with small hole, and I cover it with a bandaid with micro pores. I came to the realisation that size of the hole DOES NOT MATTER. During the day/night cycle, temp in my house shifts by a few degrees. This causes the air in the jars to contract/expand, and the change in pressure makes GE possible through the smallest hole. And that's all that king oyster myc needs. I tried larger holes or other techniques, but the single small hole works best for me, the rest of the teks provide too much GE, sometimes causing m grain to not colonise well on the top(like I said, I keep my grain on the dry side). These lids work for KING OYSTERS, not sure how they do with species that require more GE.

Another learning is that the same strain of king can produce myc that looks very different. 80% of the time it looks like whiter cobweb when growing on top, but can be stringy within the same jar as well. Eventually it thickens to a bright white.

check out http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18788133

The block pictured was 150g grain wet to 350g coir wet, produced a 170g mushroom, and lots of aborts on the first flush. It honestly blew my mind to see a third of the block go into one shroom, and I probably cleaned off another 50g of aborts. Also the coir jar looks thin - you see it in the pics above.
Coir is awesome, but will be slow to colonize.

To innoc the grain from the LC, I take out a fresh sterile syringe (i rather take a new one than use a re-sterilised one, they cost me 10 cents per), pop the wax drop off the LC jar hole, stick the same long large needle in and suck in myc. I do not filter the air that comes into the jar to equate the pressure - I would like to but I always forget. No trouble so far anyway. I put the wax back on as soon as the needle is out and pressure equated.

I then take the foil off my PCed jars, inject 2-3ml LC, place foil back on the jar and move to the next. I do not flame sterilise in between, i just rush to do as fast as possible. I never put a dirty needle back into the LC. If I run out of LC, I take a new syringe and needle.(I sometimes re-sue the needles, I let them boil for a few min and flame sterilise- My needles are 12cm long and 2mm thick, costing me about 1 euro per, so i rather not throw away)
After I am done innoculating, I throw away the syringe, take out a pack of cheap bandaids(I sometimes re-use them or just forget them on the lid when PC-ing), and cover the hole. I make sure the bandaids can breathe by putting my mouth over the now bandaid covered hole and trying to suck some air out of the jar. if I can, bandaid is ok(I do it for new brands, some cheap brands are just plastic that imitates micropore) If it cannot breathe, I scratch it with a needle. They have the white cottonish filter in the middle, so even if the band is scratched, that provides all the filtration needed.

To spawn to bulk, I put my substrate of choice in oven bags or other thermo resistant bags I may have around, make sure it is just a wee bit on the wet side, and microwave for 10-15min on high. After it cools, I just dump the jar contents in the bag. No flow hood. If grain will not come apart from shaking, i use a clean fork- I put it in the bag when hot out of the oven, then after it cools, I place the open jar at the top of the bag, wrap the bag around it, and with the fork in the bag I scratch the grain out. I then remove the jar and fork, never putting my hands in the bag. I then take 3-4 rolled up kitchen paper towels and put them in the mouth of the bag, and tie tightly with string - this provides the GE it needs. I tried tyvek as well, it works the same. At this point, with 25% spawn rate, i do not concern myself too much about how sterile everythign is. I had 100% success. Bags colonise in a week, and will often start popcorning in week 2, at which point I remove the bag and put them in my FC. MY FC has 70-75% RH, it's as well as I can do. I leave the bottom unsealed, and a small opening at the top, I figure since high RH air is lighter than air (h20 molecule is lighter than n2 molecule), this provides enough FAE. I open the tent twice a day for 20min and spray with plenty of water directly on the blocks.

Do not quote my tek for anything other than osters though, I am not sure this would work for more sensitive myc

THE BANE that I have are mushroom gnats, here in Germany they are the most common insect. I had one block turn to a mass of worms once, but since then I put cloves close to my blocks. CLoves, the spice will repell them very, very effectively. It will also kill your myc if it comes into contact, so do not powder the cloves on your blocks.

BAM! Since I follow these rules I have had 100% success.

That's why I'm never going back to supermarket shrooms  THose were cloned from supermarket ones, whenre te largest fruit in the pack was 35g. I suspect we get the bottom of the barrel quality even in the expensive supermarkets, at a price of 2+ euro per 150g pack.
