Shrooms + Low dose of paxil? Bad?
    #18917319 - 10/01/13 05:11 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Is it a bad idea to trip on psilocybin mushrooms while on a low dose (10mg) of paxil? I was diagnosed with a moderate anxiety disorder a few weeks ago and needed to be put on antidepressants, and so far it's done wonders for me. I just want to know if tripping while on an SSRI is dangerous.

You suffer from a gullible disorder. Everyone gets anxiety! Deal with it. Cut down on sugar and caffeine, get some regular exercise, eat real unprocessed food and spend more time hanging out and doing stuff with friends. Anxiety instantly cured.

Wow what bad and useless advice.

No tripping on SSRIs is not dangerous.
They can reduce shroom effects but taking more can solve that.

I was originally thought to have had only social anxiety about 6 years ago and was put on beta blockers as a result (my parents' decision). But after awhile of discontinued use my anxiety rebounded. my primary care physician has concluded that i have generalized anxiety and possible depression so they decided to switch me to an SSRI where I will gradually increase the dosage over the next few months, so this is not a new situation for me.

Fix your lifestyle, drugs won't cure your anxiety/depression.

On the contrary, mushrooms may help you become more positive and focused in life. It's just a shame you are ingesting that Pharma garbage Paxil.

telling him to get off prescriptions is bad advice? anxiety is no more than a person feeling insecure.probably due to watching too much tv and not getting outside enough.go for a 5 mile run, i promise your "anxiety" will go away. people with "anxiety" spend too much time doing nothing and dwelling on their problems. realize that you have the power to change your own mind. anxiety medications are a mere band-aid. start eating right, exercise, and quit watching tv. step up and be a strong person.

OP, how exactly do you live? Do you have friends, a girlfriend that you play around with regularly? Do you have pets to play with? Frisbees that you throw around with friends or anything that gets you out, moving and meeting people? How's your diet? How much TV do you watch, or how much time do you spend strapped to a chair banging a keyboard?

Being alone indoors and physically inactive, is precisely when most depressive / anxiety / low self esteem thoughts seem to start happening. Magically you'll find that people with a lot of stuff to do, outside, among others, are far less depressed or anxious, certainly not so to the point of taking pharma pills for it.

I wouldn't say just stop taking your pills, I'd say start getting into a lifestyle that gives your body enough signs that it's loved and useful and nice, in order to relax and flow happily. Have skin contact frequently enough, get and give massages, make love, play around with pets and run around after things, then you'll see things start working better.

Tripping is better than no tripping, but tripping alone is a bit like drinking alone. On the long run it may not be that good for ya.

Tripping with others on the other hand, woo hoo  :tripping::tripping::tripping::tripping::tripping:

I agree very much with the people who recommend to stop taking Paxil. Paxil is a old drug & it is weird that a doc would choose this as a first SSRI (if that is the case). If you stop taking the Paxil now you will avoid the horrible withdrawals the Paxil will give. Chinese herbs/chinese herbalists will be able to help you if you still feel you have a problem after stopping Paxil. SSRI's in the long run will just make you more tolerant to you own serotonin. If I feel a little down all do is ride a pushbike for about an 1 or 2 hours and I feel great afterwards, also doing something nice for other people like writing a letter or giving a seedling does wonders for depression. I suffered from anxiety/depression since I was 10 years old & tried everything, I found the reason for anxiety/depression is the lack of love. Making sure a least one person on the planet is thinking of you in a loving manner chases negativity away, so one has to go about thinking of ways to make this so.
Siberian Pine nut oil (cold pressed/wooden press) is excellent for nourishing the mind when one if feeling down also, awesome stuff.
Good luck Kaki

Note to self: Never ask medical advice at Shroomery, everyone thinks they are a doctor and ignores the original question.
Telling someone to stop taking something that is working because it's "Pharma" is like the government telling you to stop having fun with mushrooms because they are "Drugs."  Way to act like a bunch of prohibitionists.
Did any of you bother to read the part where he said he was happy about it and gave no details of his history, or did you just see the word "Paxil" and start stroking your Pharma-prohibition sticks?  Perhaps not everyone is *Just like You* and requires a different set of things to feel better.  *Gasp* it can't be?!  Someone's different?  Beat them with the stick before they escape!  Conform!!

To the OP, Real information about Paxil.  You should always step the dose up when starting and down when ending, never quit abruptly.  There will be a lag time to start noticing the effects.  Your body can get used to the dose, so it may not work forever or may need a dose change.  You should avoid alcohol, MAOIs and other depressants while on Paxil.  Most normal hallucinogens are safe but may be dulled by the Paxil and require a higher dose.

Just because for now the SSRI is working for OP does not necessarily mean it is the correct route to take. Many people are against SSRI's and other pharmaceutical treatments for depression and anxiety because in most cases they stem form social issues and or lack of exercise, sleep and lousy nutrition.

Often times doctors could care less than ask questions like whats your overall lifestyle like because in their minds thats what a psychologist should be doing and they don't get paid to do that. So instead they will write them a script and won't think twice about them until 3-4 months down the road when the SSRI is no longer effective and they get another call from you to schedule a check-up. Then the doctor will try them on a new SSRI and go form there.

SSRI's will have no problem being a legit treatment once tests are available to be able to see if there is truly a biological inadequacy within the person suffering from such symptoms. There very well could be people who suffer from such biological inadequacies and treatment with SSRI's would be very helpful. But as of now there are no known tests that can be done in vivo that could determine such things like if serotonin is binding properly to its binding site or how much serotonin is being produced.

Either way it would be beneficial to taper off the SSRI's and try natural means to eliminate the depression and anxiety. Then if that doesn't work then try the SSRI's. That's how the system should work not SSRI's first then you realize they don't work in the long run and you get fed up and try to releave the symptons naturally.

But to respond to the OP's question is it should be fine you just won't get the full effects as if you weren't taking the SSRI. If and when you do trip and if it is a good experience for you I hope you can find peace with your depression or anxiety.

Yeah well everyone else might be a moron, but that doesn't mean I'm going to join in.
This shouldn't really have to be said, but I'm going to anyway.  None of you are actually his doctor, it's impossible to make a complex diagnosis from a few paragraphs, please do not try.  Offering additions to help is fine (exercise outdoors is great), or even concerns about medications (Paxil can have harsh withdrawals if not stepped off properly, watch out) is great, but giving advice to start or stop serious medications based on your personal issues as if it's the one true course of action, just makes you look like a moron.

Yep!  Which is so much worse than people who could care less than ask questions and instead suggest 'natural' pharmaceutical treatments.  While many hide behind an 'it's just lifestyle diagnosis', I also notice most are fine with recommending a pharmaceutical treatment, but a natural one, because that's different.  But it's not, they're both just chemistry.

From wikipeida:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paroxetine#Discontinuation_syndrome

"Many psychoactive medications can cause withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation from administration. Evidence has shown that paroxetine (Paxol) has among the highest incidence rates and severity of withdrawal syndrome of any medication of its class.[52] Common withdrawal symptoms for paroxetine include nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness and vertigo; insomnia, nightmares and vivid dreams; feelings of electricity in the body, as well as crying and anxiety."
