Prepped for an expedition across Texas! Deep east Piney Woods to the Colorado in Austin. This will be my first time using an internal frame. Now I know that subject has been beat to death but I will say I rather liked my external frame before it was stolen in Malibu at the end of my last expedition. We'll see how this USMC ILBE pack works out! 3 knives, a machete, 10 lighters and a magnesium stick, 2 sleeping bags (flannel and faux down), a tarp and a tent, plenty of clothes and camping gear, 4 flashlights... about 80 lbs. all together. I think I'm set! Leaving this weekend! Wish me luck!

1 weeks worth of food for the first leg. Noodles 4 liters of water, resupply as needed for the first leg (about 56 miles from embarkation to Crockett, through Davy Crokett National Forest). Will resupply in towns as I go. Mostly Noodles on carry, more substantial nutrition in towns. Cans and wet food will add too much extra weight to an already loaded pack (although it is rated up to 120 lbs. I don't plan to carry that much).

of course, where water is concerned I have purification means (iodine is my preferred method), as 4 liters will not last 56 miles by a long shot, and there are no stations in the forest there. I left out a lot of small nick-nacks and essentials in the original post.

You left out one very important item self lighting matches. and instead of all those lighters why not one zippo. A neat thing you can do is take some cotton balls cut into thirds and stuff as many as you can into a plastic snuff can soak them with lighter fluid You can get 20 to 25 into one can . The plastic cans are air and water tight and 1 ball will burn for about 3 minutes, This is a good compact way to store any thing small you want to keep dry. Matches , salt pepper etc. Oh and you might want to jettison some things to take a spare pair of boots for a walk that long.

No reason for matches. The lighters include 7 bics, 2 long lighters (instead of matches) and yes, a zippo with flints and fuel. The wicks are notoriously hard to come by outside of the internet so i'll have to make do. The Cotton ball thing is a neat idea and so is the snuff box. Never thought of that, although i do know of a tek that utilizes cotton balls and pine resin, but never tried it myself. I've got some tricks up my sleeve for tinder. When I buzz my hair I keep the clippings, roll them into a ball, soak them in alcohol and burn. hair is really surprisingly non-flammable and is good for a make-shift torch/fire-starter for about 100 uses or so. Once the hair singes on the outside it will not reburn and the hair on the inside doesn't burn. The char will flake off over time and expose new hair, hence the limited number of uses. Rolling the fresh soaked hair ball in sand increases it's shelf-life a bit. Of course that's more of a survival technique. As long as it's dry, I can usually find a red cedar or other fibrous hardwood (in Texas, anyway) and get some damn good tinder from that by scraping a stick with a knife. Also, I have a pair of hiking boots at the bottom of my bag for use when my tennis shoes give way (i'm expecting them to last 200 miles at best). The shoes are more comfortable and will be easier to adjust to than the boots. By 100 miles my feet will be ready for boots. Those I expect to last through the expedition. I made the mistake of taking only one pair of shoes my first expedition. I ended up patching them together several times with duct tape and wood planks before I landed a pair of boat shoes that carried me the rest of the way. Never again!
