Small fruits
    #18926020 - 10/03/13 02:01 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi guys, I am a newby here.

Basically my cubensis thai strain are very small and narrow still, about 1 - 2 inches each, and the cap already seems to be breaking (see pics below). I'm unsure whether to carry on growing them or pick them now and start a new flush?

any help would be hugely appreciated,
Thanks

They are searching for FAE, this explains the long skinny stems.

Utilize a better fruiting chamber and they will be happier.

The second flush should produce slightly bigger fruits regardless.

thanks a lot for the response

ok I will fan them more often. Do you think I should pick all of them now or leave them, or pick the largest ones and leave the smaller ones?

Thanks for the help

Also how often do you think i should fan? is it too late to try and make these shrooms bigger by fanning say every hour or so?

Fanning should be an addition to and not a replacement for air holes. Imagine wrapping a plastic bag over your head and taking a breath of fresh air a couple times a day.

Pick the ones that are ready (broken veil) and the others may show some improvement by the time they mature if you fix the air problem, but the next flush would show a more noticeable improvement.

i dont have any airholes at the moment as im using a grow kit. the kit has a gas exchange patch but obviously isnt that efficient. do you think i should open the top of the bag to expose it to the air (it is currently folded over and pinned with two clothes pegs). Would this expose it to risk of contamination?

thanks for the help really appreciated and hope some good karma goes your way

There's no risk of contamination exposing a fully colonized substrate and mushroom to unfiltered air. In fact it reduces the chances by creating an environment that's hostile to molds. I would definitely unfold the bag some and try to crack it open a little, just enough so you can seen a slight opening. You don't want it to dry your substrate too much.

The filter patch provides filtered GE only for colonization.

You need lots of constant fresh air for fruiting...not just filtered GE.

Fully colonized substrates are contam resistant, as the mycellium has already colonized the available substrate, making it hard for contams to do so.
