Soaking tub before 1st flush
    #18915495 - 10/01/13 10:36 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Just a quick Q.

Do you soak your tub of P. cubensis before running 1st flush or do you put it straight to fruiting conditions after full colonization?

What I have in mind exactly is WBS spawned to 50/50 verm/coco coir mix. But does not have to be that mix necessarly (just mention what it is if it's something else).

GT

*edit*

I you do/did please mention some details:
-soak for how long?
-results better or worse?
-etc.

In the past, it has been recommended that noobs make their substrates a little dry to help cut down on contamination. The dry subs would then require some soaking just before putting in to fruiting. This may still be recommended when noobs use manure, coffee, or castings.

However, CVG is very contam resistant. When using this recipe, most people, including myself, just get the moisture correct from the start, thus not needing to soak later.

Reason why I'm asking is that after poor 1st flush of PC Puerto Rico, I've soaked it before 2nd one (and actually forgotten about it - it soaked for approx. 60hrs). When the water was poured out, there already was a lot of pins (started pinning under water). And at harvest time ammount was significantly larger than the 1st flush (1st=174g; 2nd=254g).

Am pretty sure that the moisture content at 1st was correct. So was wondering if soaking after full colonization would increse yield?

Sounds like experiment time to me!  Do up a couple tubs. Soak one of them and see if it out-performs The Other.  From what I've seen on here though, most people don't soak until after the first flush.

I don't soak my tubs at all, regardless the substrate.

Sounds like you may have an issue other than moisture.

Sometimes with multispore, you will have a crappy first flush and better second regardless, just because the strains present are mostly slow fruiters.

If you are going to soak it, you should only soak bulk for 2-4 hours. Waterlogged substrates contaminate much easier and perform worse.  The mycelium utilizes water from the entire substrate, not just the edges it is fruiting from.

I'm with Frank. Get your moisture content right to begin with and you won't have to worry about it.
