belly breathing to center restless thoughts

this is a really effective method if your mind is racing. cease all restless movements and sit or stand upright....relax and breathe as deeply as you can focusing intently on your belly button. imagine the restless, pooled up thought energy moving from your head into your navel. focus intently on this area while breathing slowly and you will eventually enter a state of peace. the restless thoughts will fade.
i used that technique this morning when i was emotionally on edge and it worked really really well. this navel area is called the "dantien" in daoism and serves a very important function in terms of emotional stability:
Quote:
Taoist teachers often instruct their students to center the mind in the navel or lower dantian. This is believed to aid control of thoughts and emotions. Acting from the dantian is considered to be related to higher states of awareness.
just thought i'd share because it usually works for me when my thoughts get out of control.

I used to do that, but at a bar, with a beer.

I do this all the time, you can apply it to almost anything. I use it mainly for anxiety.

I practice breath control, but I generally try to focus on my heart area rather than my stomach. I'll see what happens if I lower my attention.

Same here, it is a way to hold your breath much longer as well, because your intestines can absorb oxygen.

i think focusing on the stomach works better for stress, anxiety and racing thoughts/emotions because it's more grounding.
if you're meditating on unconditional love then the heart would probably be a better place to focus. just depends on your intention i guess.

Is that really true? You can hold your breath longer because your intestines absorb oxygen? I'd never heard that. Do you have a link so I can read up on it? If true that's pretty cool. Thanks.

I find this never works for me. I just like to breathe into tension and then relax. My thoughts get too negative from negative past experiences that constantly hinders it from working. I like to deep breathe when I feel good or if im really stressed but I can never have it working if i make a long session out of it. Like 1 minutes is my top. With guided meditations I can end up doing it. It depends how positive my thoughts are.

When I was watching this heroin chic od she stopped breathing and turned blue and then woke up - said she felt wonderful. She stored her breath somewhere and not in her lungs cause she wasn't breathing.
What's next performing CPR on someone's colon?

She likely was storing that oxygen in her blood.

i actually think the best method is simply exercise or some other physical outlet. but if i'm in a situation where i can't do anything like that, the belly breathing thing is the next best thing.
basically the whole key is to get out of your thoughts and into your body if that makes any sense. i think alot of anxiety and stuff like that is just being stuck in your head and disconnected from your body. at least in my experience.
