questions on wood lovers?
    #18924998 - 10/03/13 08:46 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all. My questions pertaining to wood are in the hopes of preparation of some food for outdoor beds. My questions are thus 1. What nutrients are actually extracted from the wood? 2. What type of wood is best 3. Are there types of wood that are harmful? 4. Can I use water that has had wood soaking in it for my agar to work with these (along the lines of potato wash water)?  5. Do the woodchips need to be aged? I am considering making beds for next year and have access to large quantities of saw dust and wood chips (like a 10×10×8 pile from my portable saw mill) or would it be better for me to go cut fresh and run them through the chipper?  I could even get a triaxle of mixed stuff from a buddies tree trimming business.  Or could I just knock up my big ass mound and hope for the best.

A few points...

Good wood:
Hardwoods, birch, maple, alder etc.
Willow, oak, and most deciduous.

Bad or questionable:
Cedar, pine , aromatic woods

- wood soak-water is good for agar/LC's
- sawdust is great if its from a desirable species

Best to have layered beds made up with sawdust, colonized spawn, woodchips (of various sizes) and potting soil.

Woodchips can rot very fast in a large pile. First it heats up and then molds. You have to dig in and inspect it closely. This is why I started chipping my own wood, for quality control.

What would be the largest feasible bed? Would it be the depth then that would be the stopper? Would the bed have to protected from freezing and snow? Maybe a canvas lean to over it. Are any other nutrients or additives helpful? Another question would 10 mil landscape sheeting under the bed be helpful? I kind of just want to walk out in the field and see a shit ton of shrooms growing wild and try my hand at growing these. When I first started growing it was for wanting to consume but that has turned into more of a challenge and enjoyment. Kind of like my Trinidad scorpions I cant stomach them but I enjoy growing and making hybrids of them. Its odd how priorities change.

Bed should be layered with lots of colonized chips within it. Depth should be about 6 inches or so. No need to cover with anything except mulch (shredded straw, leaves etc).

Water often to avoid drying out.

You can put a plastic greenhouse over the bed to prevent freezing and extend the season.

What about pulping cardboard mixing in some sawdust and chips and forming bricks? I would then put them in bags and pc them. Use agar wedge to inoc. Use this kind of like a master and brick to brick to get 20. After colonization put 1 per square foot of chips and sawdust over a 20x20 area. Sound like a plan? Or should I make a master from honey water soaked wood chips? Trying to go through threads but so much stuff is so old. Would railroad timbers around my 20x20 area be a bad idea? Is sterility as important as cubes?  Should I pc all wood chips cause that might take awhile 20'× 20'x6" would make for a long pc run.

I have azur and cyan beds outside and they seem to benefit from living moss on top of the humus/mulch. It acts as an insulator and retains moisture underneath.
Some species can stand freezing temps better than others.
You should be able to find info about all these things on the shroomery.
Use search.
I hope you're succesful in your endeavours.
