Question (PICS INSIDE)
    #18924420 - 10/03/13 03:28 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

A friend gave me a kit for my birthday about a month ago. I released the Qtip from the top and dropped into the rye berries. Then I shook for a few minutes and its been sitting on my counter ever since. It looks like its about 50% colonized to me. Any idea when I will be able to mix with the compost it came with?

The compost has been in my fridge and is in a bigger bag. Im assuming I just mix it together and let the bag sit. Once I mix them together should I just leave the second bag open? Or just open it a few times a day?

You are suppose to shake it once at about 25% to speed colinization... if you havent shaken it since you dropped the qtip, then do so now. After that, wait until it is ABSOLUTELY 100% percent colonized before mixing it in the substrate.

And if i were you, id re-pastuerize the substrate if its been in the fridge for a month. Also check the field capacity first. You can do this by opening the bag and squeezing a handful of the substrate. If a very slight drip comes out(a couple drops when squezzing hardest,) then the field capacity is good. If not, adjust accordingly with/without water.
To pastuerize, load sub in an ovensafe bag and put in oven at 160(or lowest setting) for a couple hours.

Oh and once you mix together close the bag and poke a couple small holes in it for gas exchange. Leave it like that until that is 100% colonized as well. Should take about 10 days, give or take. Then you can introduce it to fruiting conditions
