Question about coir pasteurization tek

Wats the point of pasteurizing the coir in an autoclavable or turkey bag?! why not just dump the thing inside of a PC and pasteurize it that way?! (with the lid open ofcourse like a normal pot)
Is it because if one were to dump the coir without a bag in a pot/pc one would not be able to attach one of them cooking thermometers? (Since u wud not be able to see nothing!) is this why they use bags?

You could do it like that but then you have to dry it out afterwards and then rehydrate it back to field capacity. Getting the right water content right first and pasteurizing in a bag so it doesn't get soaked saves you the drying step.
In case you're wondering why not just dry it to field capacity, it sounds much easier than it is.

Could you tell me how much water one is supposed to use for one brick?

RogerRabbit said: Field capacity is defined as the amount which when you pick up a handful and squeeze gently, a few drops come out. If you squeeze hard, a small stream runs out for a moment.
It's going to vary some, I would add the water after you add any other ingredients to it like vermiculite.

Frank's Proper Pasteurization Tek 3.0 discusses using both jars and bags, both with a thermometer.
