A true KING indeed!!!

Here is the biggest King Boletus I have ever found. This thing is almost 15 inches across! I found this guy when I was camping a couple weeks ago among many other fairly large King Boletes. I went back early the next morning to get more pics and to my dismay, another mushroom hunter had just came through and chopped all the Boletes that were there the previous day. I know it was a mushroom hunter, because they were all cleanly cut with a knife at the base. This person was clearly looking for Boletus Edulis, because no other type of mushroom were harvested. Any way, I am glad to have at least snapped these.

One for size comparison. That is my brother's hand and he is not a small guy. 6'2" 240lbs

Nice. But the true question of quality porcini is: how many maggots are inside? Not all the time, but generally the bigger ones like that can be filled with em.

Yeah, that is one reason why I left that one and only grabbed a couple choice younger specimens to eat that night. However, who ever came and wiped them out the next morning was not as picky. They took them all including this giant. I am sure they grabbed many that were filled with worms.
I respect the forest and leave the older wiser Boletes to raise more youngsters. If you are good to the mushrooms, the mushrooms will be good to you.

those are not kings, though? i thought kings had brown caps and pale (not yellow) pores.
a gigantic boletus none the less!
there was a story on the front page somewhere here recently, about the largest king boletus, from poland, around 3lb iirc.

Kings caps can vary heavily in color, this one just happens to be a deep red brown. Its a mature specimen, which is why the pores have turned yellow/olive. It had white reticulation down the stem, particularly just under the cap. The stem, size and shape fits King boletus to a T. It had a sibling next to it... its hiding in one of the pics.. ate that one. This one had more sun exposure which is likely why the cap is so deeply colored. The one that was growing about 10ft away from this one had a pale cap, it had barely any direct sun exposure... and it was much younger.. I harvested several pounds of boletus edulis from this area that day.

And to be more specific, its a California King. B. edulis var. grandedulis
I had considered Boletus Pinophilus, but after going over and comparing all the features again and again, It fits Grandedulis perfect.

Damn that looks delicious! So far all I've had is dried porcini, but I know they will come up in my yard soon. I harvested one last year but was too chicken to try it!

Well, if it's King-bragging time here...
These would not fit in the bag. That was on a rainy morel hunt this year.

This is quite possibly the largest King I have ever found.

For an idea of scale...

Nice Kings! Personally, I like my Kings a little younger but I have found some pretty mature specimens such as yours.
Here is my brother posing with an old soldier:

This is one of the Kings I came to retrieve the next morning, but it was gone

i woulda been hella mad. btw. i learned through my interview that the wild mushroom dish the got me first interested in mushroom was just a dry bolete powder rub on roast chicken. thats it.
but dude. it was the best chicken i ever ate. ever.
