afrogus said: I know I am going to be flamed/hated for saying this: Silk Road was a rip off. Yes it was a place people with no connections could score, but I believe that place was one of the major reason the price of LSD is through the roof. I am not dissapointed they got shut down. But then again, I have awesome connects, so I never had to get ripped off/over charge on SR. Now go ahead and trash me!
SR doesn't have any effect either positive or negative on LSD prices in my area. I get same prints they have on SR for way cheaper, so what though? Can you get ANY drug? That I cannot do, and I doubt you can either and SR offered people anything. I never used it myself, was thinking about it though. My local dealer doesn't carry 2-CB or DOM. SR offered people a chance to drugs they only read about it. Its always a bad idea to use these things as sole source of a drug, people should maintain those real life connections. Anyway there are a lots of people mailing stuff and going to western union to pay who ignored all this bitcoin crap and they are operating right thru this. The older ways of doing things aren't always so bad. Also its a better business strategy if you have drugs to sell to build a small loyal customer base and then never advertise again. You can still get rich even with a fairly small list of customers. Slow and steady wins this race. I know people who have been going 10-15 years just mailing weed west to customers in east and its their job and they got rich doing it. Beats the ass raping DPR is going to get for next few years in prison.

Let me get this straight. NASA is shut down because its deemed non essential but somehow this shit is essential.... All they did was open up new opportunities for people and increased the money they could make from it. Good job government.

i really don't know. silk road was so big, i don't really buy drugs online anymore and especially not on silk road where stuff is more expensive than normal. but i get a kick out of seeing these markets, although i guess i'm a bit out of the loop because i have no idea what site people are talking about in reference to the "big migration"
if i really cared much or had time to waste on something i don't care much about i would probably have figured it out today. i'm think most people who used silk road only figured out about it from media coverage and they are resourceful enough to find the other onion markets. as far as i know the silk road was a huge part of the bitcoin economy, i really don't know many other things to do with bitcoins for a consumer. there is investing yes, but that still relied largely on people buying drugs or other illegal things afaik.
bitcointalk is down now, that is really lame. hopefully its just me though.

yeah brah, I'm not getting bitcoin talk either. That'll hit prices if they are affected for an extended period of time. It's strange. Maybe they're just overloaded. http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/ has also only had intermittent access in the last day. It may be a simple overloading, but there may be a DDOS aspect as well. I figure the NSA is unloading all of the tools at their disposal, since they may get exposed or taken away, due to the backlash surrounding the snowden leaks.
Also, the currency is still viable, even without teh dr00gz. It can be used to transfer dirty money abroad, for all types of purposes/tax evasion. And the people who do that are in and out quickly, they don't need to care about what the market price is.
Bitcoin is global - a small minority of users use it for teh dr00gz. The money laundering (or more accurately, illicit international money transfering) aspect will soon overtake teh dr00gz, as it gets more media attention and more users.
keep this shit under wraps though.... lets at the shroomery get rich shorting this while the venture capitalists get butthurt.
in our dreams, possibly - they've got high speed trading on their side

you gotta use a vpn to advertise yyar wares.
and have a strict firewall (comodo is good), which filters by mac address (of the VPN), so that if your vpn drops, so does your ability to browse the shroooomery while logged on.

Impossible.
TOR was funded and created via grants to MIT university. Its become a world wide protected currency. It will never go away.
Every heard of litecoins either?

That's also retarded. If BTC goes down, the price of product goes up; that's about it.

It is a sad, sad day. We all knew it wouldn't last forever, but I had hoped that the Dread Pirate Roberts would bail before it fell. It's really unfortunate.
RIP Silk Road, you were loved, you will be missed. There will be others, but Silk Road was one of a kind.

What baffles me is he made $80 million, why didn't he run well before this happened? It's not hard to run the site elsewhere or even abandon it or sell on? Was be saving for a billion?

It's possible he was about to bail, and that's why they went ahead now.
But, I think the most likely possibility is that he was a true believer and was determined to go down with the ship. That's the kind of guy he was. A real hero. Man, what a loss.
