commitment to the life
    #18913044 - 09/30/13 08:26 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

How does one start and live a spiritual life when all around them is moving in the opposite direction. I have a hard time finding friends, the ones I do find are just drug dumpsters that are fucked up 24/7. I live in the valley and its kind of close minded. Any suggestions?

Find something you like, hobby, job, school, etc. where you can take classes or otherwise socialize with people who have goals beyond getting high.

I second Icelander on that.

I'm preparing for an expedition myself. 3 months and 600 miles across Texas. This will be my second expedition. The first one taught me a great deal. Self-sufficiency, extreme self-confidence, the meaning of true freedom, and peace of mind. If you're having trouble starting a spiritual journey then take a literal, physical one. I went 2 months and 800 miles from East Texas to Arizona to L.A. and Malibu. I know how that city can be =/. It will kick your ass down and when you get up it will do it again without remorse. I imagine the valleys aren't much different.
In those two months I slept on the hard ground, walked and slept through a snow storm in the middle of the low desert, walked 15 miles a day with 80 lbs. on my back and every single day of it was pure joy. Imagine true, complete freedom. It's bliss, and you can't imagine it until you've experienced it. *that* is a spiritual journey, and I heartily recommend it! You will feel better and have more self-confidence than at any other time in your life. Not to mention you will be in the best shape of your life  (after I got back I had girls coming up to *me* at the bar! And you bet your ass I had no shortage of interesting things to tell them!).

If that's too extreme, then I still recommend a change of scenery. There are far better places for the spiritually inclined to live.

I spent several years doing what you are doing with a pack, around the PNW and high desert of Eastern Oregon.  Best time of my life.

I just went back to visit some of it that I haven't seen in over 25 years a couple of weeks ago. This time by auto and campground. Those were the days. The best ones.

Aren't they though? I can't recall a time we've met on here Icelander. Odd. I see you've been around a while too.

so im sober, know lots of sober people, but looking for people who don't really use except the occasional trip for spiritual reasons. Own a house and have a good job so moving is out of the question for now. Would love to go on some typ of sojourn but I don't see how its a possibility my life being the way it is today. Maybe I just need to snap out of this funk. I've been looking to trip and have so sort of realization but it just hasn't happend yet. Maybe that is all I need.

I see. In those cases when you really can't make a change due to circumstances, I unfortunately have to recommend looking into anti-depressants. St. john's wort helped me immensely during a doldrum in my life where i had no way out. It would not fix the issue, but would make your situation more tolerable; happiness and acceptance would come a lot easier. It really saved my ass.
Do remember that if you choose to take an anti-depresssant (pharm or herbal) that weeks 2  through 5 will probably make your situation WORSE before getting better (week one is usually high energy-sunshine and cupcakes). If you are near suicide or having those kinds of thoughts you will need a support network as the initial downward trend of the therapy before improvement can push some people over the edge.
