Jobs with physical movement
    #18922384 - 10/02/13 04:47 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

i work in an office and hate it. i'm a physical, earthy person and there is no way i can consign myself to sitting in an enclosed space doing mundane secretarial tasks 8 hours a day. i just feel like i'm stagnating and not growing as a person (nor getting paid enough lol).

if i'm going to be doing mundane tasks, i need to be getting my body actively involved in them to *some* extent. preferably something where i move alot that isn't *too* backbreaking. i really want a job that allows me to be physically active for the majority of the day.

any suggestions?

that requires certification of some sort, though, doesn't it?

I've done a share of labour type jobs - landscaping, demolition and trades work (drywall and interior finishing.)

They all break the body down, and I have resolved not to do those types of jobs in the future.

I am currently a driver for a reusable moving box company. Basically I drive all over my city and outskirts dropping off plastic bins with a hand dolly. It's nothing glorious, but it's not too hard. Not boring because it's mostly driving and listening to the radio.

I like it because its 75% easy and 25% hard work and even then, it's not really that hard.

Lots of options.

What kind of work are you looking for?

Construction, labourer at a large union jobsite.

I always thought a crane rigger would be a sweet job. You tie things up to be lifted high in the air. Lots of standing around, but you have to tie the shit up right.

i wouldn't mind a job where i just move/unload shit for a large portion of the day. it's like getting paid to exercise.

luckily these jobs seem pretty easy to find. just wish they paid a bit more lol.

there tend to be union apprenticeships that pay well and put u in school for free and u get full benefits the whole time.

do your deskjob and then go to the gym and work the shit out of your body. theres just usually more upside to working in an office, better hours, holidays, etc...

if you can find a decent physical job that affords you all the benefits of an office position, and that pays well, then hell yeah. I heard that water sanitation is a pretty cool gig. takes a lot of work to get into it though

yea i've been working out every morning otherwise i go insane in the office from all the stagnation lol.

good way to get the energy moving, i just wish i had a job where i can move all day. i really don't like my office job, nor do i get paid enough for that amount of work i put in. (today's pretty slow tho, hence why i'm on the shroomery lol)

What do you do, and how much do you make? Any sort of benefits or whatnot?

I move boxes, but it's mostly driving. Make 15.75 hourly, and get 8% vacation time. Only work 15-20hrs/week. No benefits. My biggest issue is getting really short shifts 3-4hrs sometimes - I am keeping my head above water, but barely. Truthfully, I enjoy the lifestyle it allows me to have (doing some upgrading, and focusing on my sports and other lifestyle activities,) as such, I feel that having no money is a fair compromise.

I also get a 25% commission if I sell any additional moving supplies, but this amounts to next to nothing. I do however get 20-50+ in tips per month.

I am clueless about office jobs, so I am genuinely interested to hear about your situation.

After working fulltime (or more than fulltime) for awhile and thinking that was the path to success and/or happiness, it's weird working a menial part time job, but like I said, i've landed myself in a decent situation, all things considered.

i basically run the office for a local company. it's my first "real" job of out college and i'm not exactly making bank lol. only earn $10 an hour before tax which is kind of ridiculous for all of the stuff i do in there.

my duties include scheduling appointments, dealing with complaints, typing and sending out estimates for work, running payroll for all company employees, invoicing and paying all bills, reconciling company credit cards, scanning and sending legal papers, driving to get the company's mail everyday, depositing all of the payments for the company, and basically doing whatever busy-work the owner tells me to when it's slow. i also had to gather hundreds of old pages of tax documents last month for an audit lol.

i don't mind doing the work itself, but the low pay to high mental stress ratio is just ridiculous. i tend to get REALLY stressed out if i'm just sitting in one spot all day having to mentally keep track of all these things i have to do.

it's not the work i hate so much, but the physical stagnation that occurs from being sedentary all day with my mind scrambling to get things done. the only thing that keeps me sane is my lunch break where i can go outside to get the mail, otherwise i'd go crazy lol. it's just this horrible feeling of being chained to your office desk that i just cannot stand...i need to MOVE and i love being outside when working.

this will probably be the last time i ever work in an office because it's just not enjoyable for me at all. if i'm going to be doing hard work i want to be able to burn off the stress by moving and being physical...at least to some extent.

i would prefer a job with physical movement as well. With my current job i sit at a computer all day. However i cant complain too much as i work from home and make 15 dollars an hour. Not bad for my first 'real' job, one that i got 2 months after graduating high school no less.

yea working it home would make it a helluva lot more tolerable. at this job i'm basically on the owners leash *most* of the day which really sucks. luckily this place closes down for the season once winter hits so i'm gonna be looking for something new immediately.

i don't know how anyone can sit in an office all day, drives me nuts

After high school my dad hooked me up with a summertime apprenticeship through his electrician's union and it was a blast. I learned a lot of interesting things and saw beautiful women daily at lunch because we were renovating offices in new york city's financial district. Of course I was dog shit to them but it didnt hurt to try and get some looks. It was a fun group of guys I felt like it was highschool again the way we would joke around and sneak cig breaks inside and the guys really took me in and never fucked with me. They even took me to a titty bar one time after work and I had to use my brothers i.d. lol. The funny thing about those guys is they look all dirty and theyre rough around the edges but they all make over 100k a year with full benefits. I could have gotten in instead of going to college but im really looking for a business position where I could work my way up within a corporation. Maybe ill hate that though haha life is a journey

Construction sites are the most fun places you can ever work on.  Unless you are a completely humorless douchebag the camaraderie can be awesome, even between boss and employee.  If you really get good you can write your ticket.  You do get dirty, it is physically demanding but so is the gym (a bill you will never have to pay:grin:), and assholes in suits will occasionally think they are smarter than you.  I always loved that.

So what is it that you do?  I love construction myself.  Every day there is something created that you can see.

Student.

Worked as an interior finisher for a few years, in a restoration company (shit industry.)

Now, I won't paint all construction with the same brush, although from my own experience I do not resonate on a fundamental level with "construction" types. I also found the work to be back breaking and regularly being exposed to hazardous substances.

Not for me.

I enjoy very much home renovations and building things on my own terms, but not as a career.

To each their own.
