The full document goes into detail about it.
He was being blackmailed by someone with the name "friendlychemist" for 500 thousand dollars.
He had the real names, orders, and addresses of thousands of vendors and users.
DPR ordered the hit because he judged the person to be a liability.
However, records from canada show no record of someone with his name and address ever existing, let alone being murdered.
It may have been that the same people who he hired to do the hit were the ones blackmailing him, but this is questionable because he is the one who brought up a possible hit in their online messages they exchanged.

So all BTC on SR is gone forever? That's pretty messed up since it can be used legally...

The thing is, it wasn't going to be used legally. Feds wouldn't say "Oh you were planning on spending this on drugs, but you didn't get to yet, so here's your cash back. Sorry you didn't get to." You know?
It sucks for sure, but the risk of that was always there. All good things must come to an end. With how mainstream it was getting, it was only a matter of time before it happened. It was a risk people were willing to take based on its apparent anonymity and discreetness. I don't think anyone really thought about what would happen if it did shut down, though.
The underground drug market is like a hydra, though. Cut one head off and at least another grows back in its place. Someone, I'm sure, will learn from the mistakes of SR and make something new. Hopefully, though, that one will die not because of a bust but rather because of the death of the drug war.

I'm pretty sure DPR got ripped on the hit man thing. If you read more closely the guy was blackmailing him for $500k to pay his suppliers (supposedly). So DPR got him to connect him to his supplier. DPR then paid off the supplier $150k to take care of the blackmail guy. Supposedly got a pic after it was done. I imagine the guy never had suppliers and just took a fake pic, thus no record of a guy being murdered then.
The blackmail guy hacked a sellers computer to get the info. The seller probably contacted him outside of SR and thus gave him the IP info needed to get into his comp. He then had the list of the sellers customers he used to blackmail DPR.
*********
From what I am seeing the accounts that got linked back to DPR were made when he was setting up SR, not after he got complacent. Just goes to show you how much detail the feds will go after if you are a prime target. I will have to give it to them, pretty ingenious linkage.
********* Sellers never have to give up their info/address so there is a layer of protection there. Could only be traced back to them if they busted a buyer and used the shipping info and/or prints to link back. Or if the sellers made contact outside of SR via email, phone, etc.
The feds won't go after small time buyers, too much trouble for tiny charges. Feds won't even prosecute low level cases, they always hand them off to locals and locals don't have resources to go after small time buyers. So those guys are safe.
The people that should be worried are the ones buying bulk off their for redistribution, buying precursors & other chems, gun related stuff, and possibly some of the counterfeiters not based in China. I imagine those are the ones they will start hitting soon.
Even if you don't think you are at risk of being busted, take the precautions anyway. At the worst you are out the time it will take to clean your computer (get a wiping program), toss any burner cells you may have used to contact SR people, toss/shred any shipping receipts, and transfer your bitcoin to a new wallet. I would also recommend keeping the house you got stuff shipped to clean for a few weeks to see if anything happens. And yeah, I know that may be overkill but if there is even a .01% chance I was at risk I would take all the precautions. Just don't let it worry you, just clean up your shit and forget about it.

The BTC that SR was holding was being held in escrow for drug purchases. It is to be expected in a bust it gets lost. One of the downsides of running escrow.
The government will sell the BTC once DPR's trial is over. So it will be back in circulation (and probably very cheaply). It will just be unavailable until then.
But to point out, they seized $3.6M in BTC. In the past 3-4 hours since the news broke over $10M in BTC has been exchanged on MtGox so it was a relatively small amount of BTC in the scheme of things. Just going to depress the price of BTC until demand goes back up. Great time to buy though. It should go back up within a month.

The "hitman" was totally just FriendlyChemist. How obvious.
I'm not in favor of offing anyone or anything, but he probably should have looked into the identity of the "supplier."

As others have said, there will be more sites like this. Since this got to be this big and people know that it can work and produce profit for a few years before getting shut down there will be a lot more interest and I'm sure there will be more careful people making it. This guy was pretty reckless with it, even at the start. I mean if you start something like that you dont just create an account on a forum to advertise it and just leave that account with just that one post on it. I mean for fucks sake at least reply to people that posted on that thread and make a few decoy ones. I'm only surprised that he was that careless with it and that he didn't do more to cover up that early days once he he realized how big it had gotten a year or so later.

I know, but those are already in existence and haven't reached the popularity and success of SR yet, so I was specifically talking about a widely known and large operation like this. I think there is an EU version and im sure there are other smaller ones but the EU version is the only other large scale one that I know of.

I know I am going to be flamed/hated for saying this: Silk Road was a rip off. Yes it was a place people with no connections could score, but I believe that place was one of the major reason the price of LSD is through the roof. I am not dissapointed they got shut down. But then again, I have awesome connects, so I never had to get ripped off/over charge on SR. Now go ahead and trash me!
