Temp and PSI necessary for BRF jar sterilization in PC
    #18921527 - 10/02/13 02:10 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

My next attempt at the brf tek is set to begin within the week (whenever the spores arrive, really), and I do have a PC to use, however, the maximum psi I can get is about 11.6 psi (80 kPa, but I do believe that the temperature will automatically reach 248 degrees Fahrenheit when it's set to cook). I understand that 250 degrees Fahrenheit and 15 psi (103.4 kPa) are the recommended temperature and pressure for sterilization, but what I want to know is will 248 degrees Fahrenheit and 11.6 psi be sufficient, or am I looking at some serious contamination issues if I proceed with the same PC? This is the only damn PC Walmart had in the store (even on display, so what the actual fuck?), so if this will not sterilize properly, does anyone know where I can for sure get a PC that will?

I really can't use a pot/my kitchen to sterilize because of privacy concerns, so a PC is all I can do.

Steam sterilization works just fine for BRF cakes, so that PC is guaranteed to work just fine.

Just PC them for 90 minutes at your highest psi and you will be fine.

If you can heat up a PC in a bedroom, you should be able to heat up a big pot.....

if you're doing a BRF jar you only need 0psi for 90M. Any psi over 0 is just extra and won't hurt.

My bedroom is downstairs and out of sight from nosy parents/siblings; the kitchen is not.

And sweet, thank you for the tips, guys.

I find it disrespectful, arrogant, and selfish for you to be growing mushrooms in your parents home without their knowledge.

If you were to get busted, I hope your parents don't have to go down with you.

The sterilization and mycelium stage are the only things being done here. The rest is going on elsewhere. And one of my parents knows. But thanks for the lesson on respect and humility. Also, I haven't mentioned in this post what mushrooms I'm growing. You presumably have no idea whether what I'm doing is legal or illegal.

I find it arrogant of you to call me out on that. I appreciate any guidance given in terms of legalities, but to outright call me out is a bit disrespectful. There will never even be a fruit body in my (parent's home) home. In any case, even if I were audacious enough to allow fruit bodies to grow in my home, I would be considerate and decent enough to take responsibility.

I hope you realize that it's not just fruit bodies that are illegal, but any active mycellium.

Also with the fact that it's in the house that they own, even if you try to take responsibility for it if something does happen, doesn't mean they can't get caught up in it too.

I recommend an ungauged pressure cooker over steaming in a pot any day. When I had to use this method long ago I would do one hour and start my time when the thing was rocking like crazy.  Let it depressurize completely  on its own before opening.

I think I could do 4 half pints at a time, took all day to do 12 jars lol.

Well if you live locally in the US then live active mycellium is illegal, not just fruit bodies.

Well, the live, active mycelium of psilocybin mushrooms are.

I assumed by active you meant functioning, not dormant, or as conscious as nonsentient life can be.
