Dunking...a must for cakes!

Man I don't think I'll make anymore undunked cakes. My production is soooo slow and I know it has to be that the cakes are running out of moisture. Spraying them everyday just isn't enough. I've got one cake I saved inside of a jar until it started to pin. I'm dunking it tonight and will see what happens. A tip to anyone else new to growing cakes: dunk dunk dunk!

I think it has become common practice to dunk cakes, especially after the first flush. Unfortunately, I moved on to casings before I ever applied this method to a PF cake. I do plan on some experiments in the future that involve cakes; I will employ this technique before the first, and after every subsequent flush. I have however dunked old, withered casings that I assume had a similar effect to re-hydrate the substrate. Whenever I get a casing that needs watering but the casing layer is older and overlayed (forming a ?water barrier? of mycelium), I remove it like a flat cake, and dunk for a few hours. Then I just put it back in the container it was in, and patch case if necessary (sometimes use a bottom moist layer in addition).
Works well to squeeze that little extra bit out of bulk casing materials that have almost flushed out and could use some water.

dunk dunk dunk!
just leave the cake in the jar, fill with bottled water, screw on lid and put each individual jar in its own freezer lock bag and do this overnight in the fridge....birth and voila increased yields

IME, dunking ( a fantastic tek on it's own ) works very well in conjunction with the use of an internal vermiculite resoirvois (my apologies: I have no idea who came up with this idea... I read it in the MMGG). For newbies, the vermiculite resoirvois is simply an are inside a standard PF cake containing pure vermiculite, surrounded on all sides with the verm / BRF mix. This is usually made by making a hollow in the cake while it is being made with a thick pen or syringe or similar, and filling this with wet verm. Water can be injected through the birthed cake into this resoirvois, and it also retains moisture brilliantly after dunking.
Hope this helps someone.

Yeah, I do it with all my cakes, and I have found it to be an effective method of inceasing yeilds. For more info, check out where I first read about it, click here and scroll down to adaption 20. In fact, if anyone hasn't checked it out, the MMGG has lots of good stuff (although a few things are out of date nowadays)

I would only try a few jars on the first dunk I've done this once and had a slow first flush. It yielded nicely though. Iplan on trying it again next batch. The one that I dunked before 1rst flush lasted through an extra harvest past my other cakes.

i dunked my first flush EVER and its yielded rather nicely. the shrooms grow really quickly too, i dont know if its the strain (ecuador) or the dunking but i was pleased with what happened after dunking the first flush.
