SHROOMERY PART OF INDITMENT

Once upon a time, you could sign on to Silk Road and buy everything from LSD to Moon Rock molly with Bitcoin. That time is now over because the FBI along with a few other federal agencies have seized the domain and shutdown the drug-dealing site. The only question is, what took them so long?
Silk Road found its way into popular culture a couple of years ago when Gawker's Adrian Chen a big exposée on "the site where you can buy any drug imaginable." Chen made the point that it wasn't just illegal drugs that were being sold on the anonymous black market site. But when you look at the criminal complaint, it's pretty obvious that it's the drugs the Feds are interested in.
Indeed, the very first count in the complaint is for "Narcotics Trafficking Conspiracy." The complaint is filed against a Mr. Ross William Ulbricht, a.k.a. "Dread Pirate Roberts," a.k.a. "DPR," a.k.a. "Silk Road." The second and third counts include "Computer Hacking Conspiracy" and "Money Laundering Conspiracy," and based on the numbers in the complaint, the scale of the operation was nothing less than severe. The complaint says that Silk Road did some $1.2 billion in sales, amounting to $80 million in commissions.
This was not run like your standard member of the Better Business Bureau, either. At one point, Ulbricht actually tried to hire a hit man to kill a Silk Road user.
If you're interested in reading a very detailed explanation on how they caught him (connection of email addresses, vpn logs, so on) read the full criminal complaint here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/172768269/Ulbricht-Criminal-Complaint

And they said it was impenetrable....
Sad to see it go. Never bought off it personally myself, but friends have and love to tell me how safe it is.

Is anybody surprised, though? -especially after it was exposed by a well-known news site like Gawker.

DPR the owner of silk road did some stupid things in real life. He ordered a hit, might have been fbi who was the supposed hitman and he ordered fake id's to his home. He made some blunders and paid the price. No doubt he gave up the info on the sr site in hopes of getting a reduced sentence but he will go away a long time no matter what.
Bitcoins are down today but nothing dramatic.

It was only a matter of time. Tor isn't 100% secure but people treat it as such. All it takes is 1 human error to give them something tangeable to trace and then they do what they do.
I doubt they will worry about any small time buyers but anyone that bought weight or sold on there definitely needs to seriously clean their computer up and/or replace their network card (so MAC address can't be linked). And of course clean house in case anyone comes knocking.

Reuters article on the matter.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/10/02/us-crime-silkroad-raid-idUSBRE9910TR20131002
The FBI arrested Silk Road owner Ross William Ulbricht, 29, known as "Dread Pirate Roberts," in San Francisco on Tuesday, according to court filings.
Federal prosecutors in New York charged Ulbricht with one count each of narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, according to the filing.
"Silk Road has emerged as the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the Internet today," FBI agent Christopher Tarbell said in the criminal complaint. According to Tarbell, the site was used by "several thousand drug dealers" to sell "hundreds of kilograms of illegal drugs."
The site, which had operated since early 2011, also offered tutorials on hacking ATM machines, contact lists for black market connections and counterfeiters, and guns and hit men for sale, according to the charges.
Authorities also seized $3.6 million worth of digital currency Bitcoin, which was used instead of cash or credit cards to complete transactions on Silk Road. The charges against Ulbricht said his website generated sales of more than 9.5 million Bitcoins, roughly equivalent to $1.2 billion.
The raid on Wednesday was not the first time the U.S. government has made arrests related to Silk Road. Earlier this year, authorities in South Carolina arrested Eric Daniel Hughes, who used Silk Road under the name Casey Jones, and charged him in state court with drug possession. The Drug Enforcement Agency seized units of the digital currency Bitcoin, which Hughes allegedly used to purchase drugs from the online market.
Bitcoins, which have been around since 2008, first came under scrutiny by law enforcement officials in mid-2011 after media reports surfaced linking the digital currency to Silk Road.

Page 25 of the indictment mentions the Shroomery. Refers to a post by user "altoid" on here that helped to determine when SR was started since it was an account made for the sole purpose of making that single post to advertise SR.

And for anyone interested, DPR posted on BitcoinTalk asking for an IT expert to help with programming a web start up before SR was founded. He listed his gmail account as contact info in that post. Using that gmail account they were able ot obtain a picture and IP info on him from various sites.
I'm 1/2 through the indictment, I"ll post more when I'm done

The trace back to him also started when he got fake IDs shipped internationally with his pic and various info that got caught on a random customs search. He never accepted the package so was never charged and said something like "theoretically anyone could go on the internet to a site like silk road and get IDs with my pic on them".

There will be more. There already are other sites like SR, none of them as big of course. It's just like prohibition, where there is money to be made there will be people willing to take huge risks to make it.
I'm really surprised by this though.
