EXTREMELY slow colonization
    #18920256 - 10/02/13 10:11 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I did my first 7 jars like 2 months ago, however I believe the seeds were too wet because all the jars got some slimy all over one side of the jars. Definitely bacteria.
Because of that I started up another set of jars last month. Only one of them are colonizing, albeit very  slowly. It's only covered the corner bottom, around 20% of the jar.

I'm using WBS with Franks tek.
I have one more syringe I'm going to work with.

What temperature do you try to regulate at?

Many factors can slow growth:

  • More than 5 degrees off the optimum temperature and they myc will hardly move at all. Dial it in!
  • Too little gas exchange will suffocate the myc and it will stall.
  • Genetics. Once in a while you get a really pathetic strain. I doubt this is the case here, if you inoculated using a multispore syringe.
  • Contams (which are not always invisible)
  • If you use the same mycelium for a very long time on the same medium, it can become senescent. This is usually only a problem if you are repeatedly cloning fruits, growing them out, and then cloning again, using the same fungus for multiple fruiting cycles.

My advice: Drop the syringe on a couple of agar plates (just one drop each), find a nice rhizomorphic zone, and run with that. It will also let you isolate out any contams that you encounter. Of course this means you'd have to get set up with agar!

Well I'm currently keeping them in a closed cabinet over my refrigerator. I always keep my apartment temp around 70-75 degrees f

Any advise for my next batch? Most of my jars aren't even showing colonization after a month. Only one growing the most.

Should I have a heater or something
