dormant or not

I have recently had an important question posed to me, what would it mean if a of jar full of cardboard and coffee grounds had a rhizomorphic colonization after laying dormant for over 6 months. Is this normal slow colonization because of the substrate? No other organisms are visible, there were air gaps between cardboard, would in vitro fruiting be plausible in this instance?

Bacteria and fungi such as molds will colonize coffee grounds if left for long periods.

Molds don't grow rhizomorphs so I assume you're mistaking bacteria which often forms in linear growths that new growers often mistake for mycelium.
