Question about the importance of casing

Ive always heard that casing is not necessary for cubes, but take a look at wat i came across in the mushroom cultivator book:
Mushroom mycelium releases several metabolites as it grows through a substrate, most importantly CO2. Other compounds identified by researchers as metabolic waste products include acetone, ethanol and ethylene. Upon casing, the release of volatile metabolites from the spawned compost or grain is drastically inhibited. The casing layer interferes with the free diffusion of acetone, and hence its concentrations in the casing biosphere increase. (mushroom cultivator pg. 354)
So...?

That book is over 30 years old, there is a lot of bad info in it.
That says nothing about cubes....
Casing cubes is not needed, and provides no benefit unless proper fruiting conditions cannot be met.
Casing PE tends to cut down on blobbing tho.

Yup. Almost all my mushroom books I've picked up are dated and have really bad info in them. Even on THIS site, if you go back far enough, people were using aquariums with a tilted pane of glass in i to grow mushies. A LOT of new info is here though. You can learn everything you need to know a hundred times over if you study this site for a while. I lurked for for a year before I even bought supplies (cause I was poor @ the time). Just use that book for a coaster or something and keep reading the Shroomery.

Hmm thnx. And ive never heard of this term "blobbing"! Is it just blobbing of mycelium that looks bubbly without any adverse effects, or will "blobbing" hinder growth of fruit bodies etc?

Blobbing is what you normally get with PE the first flush.
Just a bunch of mutant fruits.

It has recently been discovered that casing a PE bulk substrate with Jiffy Mix dramatically reduces first flush blobs.
It helps to produce a more even pinset of "normal looking" penis fruits.
