how do the ladies feel about beards? (physically)

I was thinking about growing out a beard but my lady and i have a long distance relationship currently so by the time we see each other again it will have already grown out. But i was curious, how do you ladies feel about beards? And i mean that in a physical sense, if they're past the stubble stage do they hurt to kiss? rub you raw when receiving oral? etc. all input welcome!

I have a feeling Shroomerites aren't fans, I've posted a few pics in the guys of the shroomery thread and they haven't received much love - if any at all.
IMO the secret to having a beard that your girl will like is how you trim it. For example, anything growing from the cheeks/neck/chin can grow fairly long and not be an issue. You want to make sure you at least keep the moustache/handlebar/lower lip area trimmed back a bit as that's what will cause all the tickling. I've got a Serj Tankian early SOAD style beard going at the moment and Mrs. Jordy likes it. It also doubles as a good tickler if you can co-ordinate the hair onto your girl's bits.
And don't forget the following; 'That clean shaven guy looks super manly' - said no-one, ever.

im a gay guy sooooooooooo i can relate on a ladies attraction to a man and i will say this....some guys can grow a beard and it looks good on them. A LOT of men grow beards that make them look haggard and dirty and nasty looking.
Even guys who the general public would consider attractive men - justin timberlake, brad pitt, shea labouf, toby maguire, ect have all had BAD beards at some time or another. You can google it.
point is DONT be one of those guys.
also if your gonna have a beard.....dont have a neck beard. Or a goatee with braids. OR if your facial hair looks nappy or only grows in patches, keep it smooth or just a little stubble.
having a beard is a lot more maintenance to actually pull off looking good than just being clean shaven.
otherwise you just look like another dirty joe schmoe.

Beards are great as long as they are past the "prickly" stage, so perhaps longer beards are better than shorter beards in that respect.

I'm a new resident of Beardland and I've found the responses to my new look very positive.
It started on my 2 week trip to Burning Man, decided I wasn't gonna shave and see what happened. It didn't look too good for the 1st few weeks, but it's become a part of me now.
Plus my girlfriend is a total bilf pussy dripper, so it works out well for me

i feel like you need to be skinny most of the time to pull off beards, or atleast the scruffy bears or else it looks patchy.
when your skinny your hair is more closer together so it looks more 'full'
some fat people can pull off beards, but its usually only long beards that do it for fat/chubby people..
im workin on getting skinnier again, ive been told i look sexy with the short scruff/messy look by 3/4 the people, n then a whomping 1/4 usually my mom or my guy friends..
for some reason girls imo like scruff until you kiss them obsessively and your hurting there chin or something from the rubbing hairpoints.

I think this Lady is on to something. Early certain stages of facial hair growth can be QUITE prickly. Stubbly is fine for me and my dude, but after stubble I start to notice his discomfort.

Honestly, a guy having a beard has always been a turn off for me. I like the clean cut type, but I suppose I could deal with a little scruff. He would have to be one hell of a guy though! But one time my friend came to school and her upper lip looked completely raw. I asked her why and she said she made out with a guy who had a beard the previous night.
When she told me that, it pretty much confirmed my opinion on guys with beards. But each girl is different and you should do what you like!

I think there should be a sticky thread for the male shroomerites to get facial hair style advice from the female shroomerites.
I find it really hard to predict which styles will get me compliments and which will not.
From what I've gathered and experimented with though, it is mostly about looking well groomed and neat...

Same here, this is how I feel about beards. When I think of guys with beards, they are either hipsters, hippies, homeless, blue-collar, hunters, rednecks, or old geezers. Chances are if you have a beard, you fall into at least one of these categories. None of these remotely resemble me or my lifestyle or my interests, or the type of guy that I look for.
But, some women like mustache rides, or "beard rides," I suppose. I don't understand how anybody could enjoy somebody with facial hair going down on them. It scrapes the skin and does not feel good for me at all. Maybe if their hair felt like fuzzy faux-fur, but that's not what it feels like. It feels like scratchy sticky pubic hair rubbing against your skin like sandpaper. 5 o clock shadow is the worst though, that feels like cactus spines poking at your clitoris.

From a guy's perspective, what is the appeal of having facial hair? I don't really care for it, but a little bit of scruff is okay. IMO, facial hair always makes a guy look older than he really is.

I guess for guys looking older isn't so bad. But it is something I try to avoid as a female.

Yes, a woodworker does count as blue-collar. You would fit exactly as the type of person that I would expect to have a beard.
Some blue-collar people don't ever have beards, such as the military. Some white-collar people do have beards, such as some engineers. Usually these engineers fall under the category of brainy kooks, sometimes autistic, who are brilliant at math and physics but lacking in the social skills department. See my other categories of "hobbit" or "recluse," which I meant to use synonymously with "old geezer." I suppose brilliant artsy types tend to have beards too, but they tend to fall under the same category as "dishoveled" and "unemployed," only a step up from "homeless."
As for examples of white-collar people, let's see aside from CEO's, anybody who works in teaching, marketing, business, sales, politics, government, finance, etc. they are typically not going to have beards. This is why I associate beards as being blue-collar, but I don't mean this in a bad way. Tattoos are also very strongly connected with blue-collar status as well, and I have a few. I very, very rarely meet white-collar people who have tattoos. Or if they have them, they never tell anybody about them and never show it off, for obvious reasons.

I still consider beards to be blue-collar, because even "white-collar" people who have beards stereotypically tend to be people who are on the fringes of society. Whether it's because they are hobbits, recluses, mentally ill, dishoveled, or have poor hygiene. They are not the typical people you would expect to find working at a corporation, and if they are, they don't work with people.
More likely, they probably work in art, and just spend all day indoors holed up in their studio working on their own. Or they work with computers or do some type of mathematics or engineering that doesn't require them to have any sort of image. That's why engineering companies don't even care if their employees speak english. As long as you can do the work, what does it matter if you don't know how to communicate with customers? What do they care if you smell bad and are unhygienic and give a bad impression to anybody else? If you worked in any other department, such as sales or accounting or marketing or even at the front desk, they would probably ask you to shave your beard off, or at the very least trim it so you don't look like an unkempt wild man.
Jobs that are blue-collar, which is most often manual labor (i.e. construction, oil rig work, horse training, whatever it is), don't necessarily require a squeaky clean look upon their employees. That's why beards and tattoos are both heavily associated as being blue-collar.
I think the only blue-collar jobs that I can think of off the top of my head that do not allow beards are in the military and food service. You can obviously see why it wouldn't be allowed in food service, that's just common sense. But the reason it's not allowed in the military, is because the military is strict about image. But seeing as how the military is a division of the government, and there are almost never any bearded politicians, you can see that it is a dress code that is enforced by the "white collar" class of society.
With that, I forgot to add the classification of "religious" to people who wear beards. Traditional Muslims and Jews wear them long and wild.

I'd say beards are stylish enough ATM that you will see them in all aspects of society, even at the top. But that's a fad and before long it will once again mostly be lumberjacks, hippies and pirates who have beards.
I was growing my stache for a minute, but I just couldn't deal with it. I'm liking clean shaven these days. Guess I'm not so good at being stylish. Plus with my prematurely grey hair, people thing I'm like 80 when I have a beard.

The head of the federal reserve is not a politician in the sense that he doesn't run for office, theeefore doesnt have to appeal to public tastes. But I never said that bearded men don't exist in the government. Just that they seldom exist. If you can only manage to prove that two percent of employees have facial hair in the government, that only proves my point, it doesn't disprove it. One example doesn't mean anything.

This is a thread about women's opinions on beards. I mentioned that some women enjoy the way they look and the way that they feel, but I personally do not.
Facial hair was more common among the upper-class in previous centuries, because facial hair was the style of aristocrats back in the day. It signified complexion and sophistication. But like with the monocle and the pocket watch, they fell out of style among aristocrats. They are still in style, but nowadays they are mostly popular among subversive groups. Beards are the style of choice among hippies, hipsters, creative artists, blue-collar men, country folk, and older men. These are the subcultures that beards are the most popular among. This is not me passing judgment, but my observations about where the beard has gone.

and then she adds more stereotypes then her original statement do you know how diverse life is? im not trying to have a history lesson either, my answer to your history lesson would be the same, do you know how diverse life is? so please, its one thing to answer if you like it or hate it, but your stereotyping is just unbelievable considering you hate being stereotyped. don't stereotype me or others and weigh something degrading like that on men growing a beard, not all people Think like you do.. i rock the scruff because i believe it looks good,Im from NY, already have a job. hope im not a loser!, do not associate my beard with being southern, because im not. do not associate it with being dumb or a social recluse either, just associate my beard as what the name of the beard implies. ive seen both blue/white collar workers with and without beards also, just saying im happy not everyone thinks like you..
i think scruff is awesome at times, its good to mix it up. im bisexual. ive seen people who i believe can rock it and who can't. it happens to fit well on me so im told.

You're right. I had an ex who grew a beard, and I always secretly hated it. And after we broke up, this made my hatred for beards grow ever more than before. He was also blue-collar, a red-neck, yet at the same time a student of mechanical engineering. A failing student, but a student nonetheless. My comments towards beards were really subliminally snide against my ex more than anybody else who has a beard.

I will admit that me saying that certain white-collar personalities grow beards is a stereotype (see above). But the rest of the stuff, such as me saying "beards are the most popular among so and so" is not a stereotype. It's the equivalent of somebody saying "Louis Vuitton brand-namewear is the most popular among upper crust socialites," or "Shiseido makeup is most commonly worn among Japanese women," because uhm, it is.

I wonder how quick the regret piles up when everyone around you is getting married and doesnt want to fuck you anymore for fun and the ones you like don't take you seriously enough even if they 'want to'. is this what she wants? is this what you want? or is it really a lifestyle you will die with? Given the girl im talking about is my age and still has time to clean her act up before point of no return in 'my eyes'

Its terrible because she's really cool, its just, i don't think i could trust her in the long haul, what am i saying, i dont think i can trust her in the long AND short haul if it ever even did occur. im all for having fun, but lets just say you and this chick are on 'that level of sexual adventure' which seems like the point of no return in the marriage realm.. your too used to random useless fucks and not giving a shit, addicted like a drug. I wonder how quick the regret piles up when everyone around you is getting married and doesnt want to fuck you anymore for fun and the ones you like don't take you seriously enough even if they 'want to'. is this what she wants? is this what you want? or is it really a lifestyle you will die with? Given the girl im talking about is my age and still has time to clean her act up before point of no return in 'my eyes'
look at the blowhard getting all butthurt!
Why does it not surprise me that you're one of THOSE useless idiots that actually believes in the "get married, settle down, and live happily ever after" fairytale dream? How many people does that ACTUALLY happen to?

quite a lot actually... It's just more fun not to do it. lol.
I grow a beard when I'm lazy, shave when I have to look professional or go and meet new people in a formal setting.

Well 50% actually divorce so we can automatically discount those people. Within the other bracket of the 50% that stay married there are marital issues that don't surface to the public--perhaps secret cheating, financial ruin, separated but legally married, drug use, even spousal abuse or jail time...
I don't know man. My favorite TV show is "Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry." Maybe it says something about me. I think everybody needs to watch this series before they get married. Spook the bejeezus out of you.
My favorite episode was the one about the surgeon who ended up being an IV demerol addict, then lost his medical license, and then started illegally taking and selling dead bodies for a profit of like $11,000 each. I think he served prison for like 11 years or something.

I really like the spectrum of beards. I'm enamored with the world of touch, tactile sensory...so whenever any of my previous loves would go through stages of beard/no beard it was always amazing to feel the differences (with hands, lips, other body parts).
I don't know about consistent beards or consistent smooth faces. There's just something about witnessing (and touching, exploring!) new avenues on a person's body--and facial hair is amazing for that.

One day I'd love to be able to bathe in as much ignorance as you seem to do.

That is interesting that California, one of the largest states, is excluded from the statistics. It would seem to bring the divorce rate up higher if the state were included.
Your site also gives 2 sources which put the number at 11% and another one at 34%.
One statement stood out to me too: "Couples who live together before marriage are more likely to divorce."
This signifies that some people might abstain from divorce is because of religious reasons. Others might abstain from divorce because they are trying to think about their children. So the fact that divorce might be around 25% is not really any indication of a successful marriage; simply because people don't choose divorce doesn't mean there is nothing unpleasant going on secretly in the marriage (which is what I mentioned earlier).
But in response to your link, note that RE-married individuals count as "married" in these type of statistics.
Quote:
In 2008, 10.6% of the population was divorced. The percentage who were married was 50.2%, separated was 2.2%, and the percentage of never married adults was 30.8%. The percentage of married individuals includes those who are remarried. It is also interesting to note that in 2001 it was estimated that 21% of men and 23% of women over 15 years of age had ever been divorced.

I think you guys need to give her a break. This thread is called "how do the ladies feel about beards". She has given more perspective than any other fem in the thread.
Also, she's pretty much correct IMO. I do have a beard, and I certainly do fall into her category of hippie/hipster, artist, spiritual, reclusive, and unemployed. I have done tree work/manual labor as well. I found myself agreeing with her lists when considering other men who have beards as well.
Of course anybody can grow a beard if they want to. Even women. But she pretty much summed up the common types of men that choose beards.
Who cares if she doesn't like them?

I did mention in addition that many other women like beards. I simply just am not one of them. Many women also like long Fabio-type hair on guys, I don't either. Many women like hipsters in skinny jeans, and I don't. Lots of women (and men) don't like tattoos, but I do. Lots of people don't like flashy, bright-colored clothing, but I do. I never told anybody to shave their beard off or change their looks to adhere to my taste or my preconceived notions, they should wear what they like but it's just not for me, that is all.

I'm in a relationship with a guy with a beard and it's cool. I used to not like it much at first but it grew on me. Now I prefer it compared to no beard. Doesn't cause any proximity problems either, only stubble does that IMO.
I don't like those neck beards personally but a nice proper chin-beard is nice (not talking about a goatee or anything like that, I mean a full beard).

Beard:

No beard:

I prefer to NOT look I'm 16.
My chick won't let it get to lumberjack status. But I refuse to shave clean, that shit is fucking goddamn annoying. I hate shaving. It's always itchy as fuck... And I look stupid as fuck clean shaven. + I'm not a chick.
My girl would probably prefer me clean shaven. But she realizes that is a fucking futile effort. and we've reached a compromise that I just don't let it get out too of control.

Beards, by all means. I seem to be especially drawn to guys that have the Guy Fawkes look. If he has long hair, too, I'm pretty much his. Not that there's anything wrong with the shaved look. It just doesn't appeal to me anymore. What can I say? I need a man.

I shave when I feel like I have to for some assignment. This can be rather random with the freelancing work I do. So basically, the more facial hair I have, the poorer I am
This is not really laziness as I do keep every stage of growth as nicely trimmed as I can! I just like to grow it but am sometimes forced to a stop.

I've always has some form of beard since I was 19, I literally have not had a clean chin in nearly 7 years. Mrs. Jordy likes it. I have the same problem as Shroomism, I look young when I shave. Plus I have a round face and the beard gives it a bit more definition.

I think facial hair is unkempt and weird looking. It's better if he's shaven.

i like my guy clean and shaven when i want to touch him or look at him.. the scruff makes him look like a bad ass which also appeals to me.
with the scruff the kisses are irritating to the skin though.

Ballerium said: From a guy's perspective, what is the appeal of having facial hair? I don't really care for it, but a little bit of scruff is okay. IMO, facial hair always makes a guy look older than he really is.
I can't let a thread about beards stay dead.
For me the appeal is largely tactile. You know that look a dog gets on it's face when you scratch it in just the right spot? I couldn't understand it until I had a beard to scratch. Having a beard is like a consolation prize for not having a G-spot. All those nerves on the face get stimulated every time the beard is touched, every time the wind blows, every time I nuzzle into a pillow at night.
Also, having a beard prevents shaving, an act that irritates the skin and involves dragging a razor blade across the sensitive skin of the face and neck. The razor blade leaves a bunch of sharpened hairs all over the face. This turns your face into an inverse iron maiden. Shaving also promotes acne and and ingrown hairs. Sure, you could slather your face with chemicals to help prevent these problems, but why?
Beard maintenance is also a pleasure, as it involves playing with one's beard, which is similar to a covert form of masturbation.
The beard can also hold smells pretty well. It holds the smell of a meal, a hint of the smell of the oral gratification of a lover, even the smell of a recently smoked bowl.
All in all, having a beard is a wonderful sensory experience. I'd have to resent any girl who felt that I needed to mutilate myself by shaving it off. And as a final statement on "why love the beard?", I can do this in real life:
In response to the stuff about no beards in corporate culture, I think the idea is rationalized (at least in some of the corporate cultures my frinds work in) from a pretty ridiculous study that that showed that people with beards were perceived as less honest. However, according to another study these views may have changed:
http://chronicle.com/blogs/percolator/the-trustworthiness-of-beards/22581
I would guess that the inherent sliminess of corporate culture is at least partly responsible for changing people's stereotypes about beards. After-all, only a truly dishonest authority would demand a lack of beards just to look honest, so you can probably trust people that have the beard-integrity to rebel against such heinous and unjust rules.
I'd also like to apologize on behalf of my beard if it's tickliness or scratchiness has offended any of the ladies in the world. Your tolerance is appreciated.

At a family reunion about 5 female members of my family made me shave mine. Maybe they don't like beards or they think that I personally don't look good wearing one.

I think looking older extremely appealing to younger men
People tend to take older guys more seriously than younger men because of some kind of implied wisdom/experience/maturity. It's complete bullshit too because the proportion of older guys who are immature losers that don't have their shit together seems to be just as high as younger men.
When I was 17 I had already been living on my own in an entirely different country than my parents for 3 years, and was running my own business (granted I got started using my parents generous capital). I felt like I had the maturity/experience of a person twice my age yet could help shake the feeling that people thought of me as "just another" snotty teenager, especially at first glance.
Growing facial hair helped a great deal. Men took me more seriously and women, not just girls suddenly became available.
So ye beards are amazing. They allow you to appear different ages, look more mature, keep you warm and can be styled to make you look both sophisticated and wise or laid back and feral. Beards are awesome.
